3 New Updates within the Supply Chain

Electronic Notification Compliance

Warehouse managers and managers of marine, air and rail transporters be aware. It is the Canadian Border Security Agency, or CBSA will start to make sure that its electronic system for notification. As of July 10, 2015 it has been required for warehouses to conform to the electronic arrival of the warehouse and conveyance notification requirements.

Since the system is a new one there are no penalties monetary for non-compliance are currently being determined. However, financial penalties in the Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS) will begin to be assessed in the event of non-compliance after January 10th 2016. Similar notifications for air, marine and rail transportation that arrives in Canada came into effect on May 6, 2015;

New Occupational Standards

Standards for occupational standards are in place for the majority of jobs. They outline the specifications and performance expectations for certain jobs. Today due to the Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council (CSCSC) the four new positions in supply chain have occupational standards. These are:

  • Expediter
  • Logistics Analyst
  • Logistics Planner
  • Rate Clerk

Standard for those positions, and all the 44 other supply chain jobs that are covered by occupational standards are available on the CSCSC’s site.

June Freight by the Numbers

The value of freight transported between US between the US and Canada as of June 15, 2015, was $58 billion. This is the value of all freight that was transported via pipelines, railroads, trucks vessels, air, and pipeline.

Although $52 billion might seem amazing but it’s 10.3 percent less than the June 2014 freight value. There are a variety of reasons for this decline. The first is that the current recession in Canada has affected the shipping industry in all aspects. A lower mineral oil price, which is a an element of this cargo, which means that the exact amount is now valued at a lower. In addition the value of US NAFTA freight decreased by 3.8 percent from June and the value of the US-Mexico freight is up 4.4 %.
