Wood is porous and can become contaminated by insects or mould as it ages. To prevent these problems from happening, pallets must be heat treated before they can be reused or used again. Wooden pallets that are damaged or unfit for transporting products or materials must often be thrown out.
Recycling
Wood is more difficult to recycle than plastic due to hygiene concerns and wooden pallets often have metal. According to the US Forest Service estimates, wooden pallets are becoming more recyclable, but plastic ones are more recyclable.
Another advantage of plastic pallets is their ability to be made from recycled materials. There are increasing concerns about wooden pallets’ environmental impact despite continual eco-friendly improvements in the global pallet industry.
