FORKLIFT SAFETY TIPS

Forklifts can be used to move heavy loads in industrial and warehouse settings. Their operation is fraught with dangers that can cause accidents and injuries, if safety precautions are not taken. Here are a few essential tips for forklift safety to ensure workplace safety:

Proper training: Before operating forklifts, employees must undergo extensive training in order to fully understand their functions, controls and safety protocols. Topics such as handling loads, maneuvering within tight spaces and emergency procedures should be covered in training.

Regular maintenance: Make sure that forklifts receive regular inspections and maintenance to detect any issues or malfunctions. Check brakes, steering systems, tires and hydraulic systems.

Load handling: Always adhere the load capacity recommended by the forklift. Secure loads properly to prevent them shifting during transportation. Avoid overloading the forklift by distributing loads evenly.

Safe Operation Use the forklift with a controlled pace, especially in areas that are congested. Avoid tumbling or losing control when approaching ramps or surfaces with uneven or steep slopes.

Clear visibility: Maintain the windows, mirrors and lights of your forklift clean and free from obstructions to ensure clear visibility. When approaching pedestrian areas or intersections, use horns to warn others.

Pedestrian safety: Create designated pedestrian zones and walkways separate from forklift traffic in order to reduce the risk of collisions. Employees should be educated on the importance to stay clear of forklifts, and not walk under raised loads.

Avoid Distractions Avoid distractions, such as listening to music or using a mobile phone while operating a lift truck. Keep your attention on the task and be aware of all surrounding circumstances.

Emergency Preparedness Familiarize with emergency procedures including how to exit safely from a forklift if there is a malfunction. Fire extinguishers, first aid kits and other safety equipment should be readily accessible and you should know how to use these items.
