Since plastic pallets were introduced to the market, there has been a controversy between plastic and wood pallets. If you visit any of the few (not many) regularly updated websites of pallet manufacturers with news and information, you’ll see the argument that “our solution is better than yours” is put forth.
However, this is the most advantageous perspective to examine the wood-versus-plastic debate.
To begin with, there is nothing against plastic in the wood pallet sector. This is not a conspiracy. Like everyone else in the world, those who work in the wood pallet sector are huge plastic aficionados. Plastic’s invention has eased our lives in too many ways to list. Everything from cell phones to shampoo bottles to printers, photocopiers, and the interior of the family car. Whoa! There are countless items on the list. It is inconceivable to envision a world without plastic.
And therein lies the core of our argument.
Although plastic is necessary for the production of countless products, it is created by the burning of finite fossil fuels. Therefore, why use valuable fossil fuels to produce goods like pallets that don’t require plastic?
Pallets and timber crates that have been heat-treated are just as strong, long-lasting, and hygienic as any modern plastic pallet. Wooden pallets are more hygienic than plastic ones since the latter can harbor bacteria for a longer period of time and be harder to eradicate, even with washing!
Consumers of wood pallet makers are also aware that wood pallets are 100% recyclable at the end of their life cycle, originate from sustainable forests, are less expensive to create, and do not needlessly waste our limited fossil fuel resources during production.
