What Pittsburgh makes and ships
Pittsburgh at a glance
Pittsburgh still works its rivers, where barges move coal and aggregates through a system of 16 locks and dams past the Mon Valley steel plants. On land, I-79, the Turnpike and I-376 carry trucks to metals mills, airport business parks and suburban warehouses.
Metals anchor the region's freight. The Mon Valley's steel plants include a coke works in Clairton, a steelmaking plant in Braddock and a finishing mill in West Mifflin, and specialty-alloy mills run along the Allegheny at Brackenridge and Natrona Heights and up the Kiskiminetas at Vandergrift. The Port of Pittsburgh Commission counts 200 miles of commercially navigable waterways across 13 counties, and coal has carried most barge tonnage, with sand, gravel and other aggregates behind it. Pittsburgh International Airport handles freighter cargo, and several wholesalers and produce dealers still trade in the Strip District.
That makes Pittsburgh a heavy-load pallet market. Coil, plate, bar and alloy products overwhelm a standard stringer, so metals plants buy block pallets, custom runners and skids sized to the product. Warehouses near the airport and along the Turnpike buy standard 48x40s for retail and e-commerce freight. Food wholesalers in the Strip and beyond need sound, dry boards for coolers, and exporters shipping by barge, rail or air need treated lumber.

How freight moves
I-79 runs north–south west of the city, linking Cranberry Township with Washington County. The Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) crosses the northern and eastern suburbs, I-376 connects the airport, Downtown and Monroeville, and I-70 runs through the southern counties to New Stanton. The Southern Beltway (PA 576) now links I-376 near the airport with I-79, while the Mon/Fayette Expressway's section toward Duquesne is still under construction. On the water, Pittsburgh sits on the M-70 Marine Highway, which ties into the M-55 route down the Mississippi to New Orleans.

Which pallet to order
The right pallet grade for Pittsburgh.
Metals plants should plan on block pallets or custom skids and runners built for the product's weight and footprint, usually from new lumber, since coil, plate and alloy bar quickly crush a worn stringer. Airport-area and Turnpike warehouses run recycled GMA-style 48x40s, Grade A for retail outbound and Grade B for storage. Produce wholesalers and food plants do better with AAA or new pallets. Any crate leaving the country, by air from Pittsburgh International or by container through a coastal port, needs HT pallets marked under ISPM 15.
