What Tampa makes and ships
Tampa at a glance
Tampa Bay's freight starts at the water: Port Tampa Bay, which calls itself Florida's largest port by tonnage and land, moves fuel, phosphate, steel and a growing container trade. I-4 carries goods east toward Plant City, Lakeland and Orlando.
Petroleum products are the biggest line at Port Tampa Bay, but container volume has climbed fast, and a refrigerated terminal at the port handles fresh produce and proteins in trade with Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica. Farms ring the bay. Plant City, which Hillsborough County calls the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World, picks berries from November into early spring, and Ruskin and south Hillsborough grow fresh-market tomatoes. Along I-4, Lakeland and Polk County have filled with big distribution buildings that reach both Tampa and Orlando.
Those two worlds drive different pallet orders. Berry and tomato packers need pallets lined up before the crop comes in and specs that hold up in coolers and reefers. I-4 DCs cycle standard 48x40s for grocery and retail freight. Port-side shippers loading containers for Mexico, Central America or beyond need heat-treated wood, while steel and machinery can call for heavier block or custom builds.

How freight moves
I-4 begins at I-275 in Tampa and runs east through Brandon, Plant City and Lakeland to Orlando. The I-4/Selmon Expressway Connector gives trucks exclusive lanes to the Port of Tampa without threading Ybor City streets, and the Selmon continues east to I-75 at Brandon. I-75 skirts the city to the east, and I-275 crosses the bay to St. Petersburg. Rail containers for the region move through the Central Florida Intermodal Logistics Center in Winter Haven. Tampa International handles air cargo, and the port's refrigerated berth links to Mexico and Central America.

Which pallet to order
The right pallet grade for Tampa.
Strawberry and tomato packers should line up Grade A or new 48x40s before harvest starts; cooler and reefer work punishes cracked boards. I-4 grocery and retail DCs run Grade A recycled for racking and Grade B for one-way store loads. Port shippers headed to Mexico, Central America or farther need HT pallets marked under ISPM 15. Steel, machinery and other heavy freight usually belongs on block pallets or custom skids sized to the load. Your account manager sends the grade spec in writing for sign-off.
