What Austin makes and ships
Austin at a glance
Austin's freight runs on I-35 and the SH 130 toll road, which loops east of the city past an EV assembly plant near Del Valle. North in Williamson County, chip suppliers fill buildings around Round Rock, Hutto and the new fab in Taylor.
Austin builds electronics. A 2021 FreightWaves report quoted the regional manufacturers association counting about 1,800 manufacturers, roughly half in computer and electronic products. The owner of the large chip fab in Taylor said in July 2026 that operations there are expected to begin this year, and ECR's Q2 2026 report names semiconductor makers and their suppliers as the main driver of industrial leasing, with Round Rock and Georgetown taking most new occupancy. Southeast Austin, near the airport and SH 130, holds much of the newer big-box warehouse space.
Pallet demand follows production more than ships. Fab suppliers and electronics plants receive parts, tools and packaged materials that need exact-footprint pallets. Big DCs in Southeast Austin and Hays County run standard 48x40s. South on SH 130, Lockhart's new cold storage and food plants add freezer demand. For ocean freight, the nearest container port is Port Houston, reached by US 290 or SH 71.

How freight moves
I-35 carries north–south freight between San Antonio and Dallas, and SH 130 parallels it to the east as a tollway from Seguin to Georgetown, built to pull Laredo truck traffic off I-35. US 290 and SH 71 run east toward Houston. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport handles air cargo southeast of downtown, beside the SH 130 interchange on SH 71. On rail, a city-owned short line from Giddings to Llano meets the Class I network at McNeil, and Class I tracks follow MoPac, the expressway named for the railroad that built them.

Which pallet to order
The right pallet grade for Austin.
Match the pallet to the dock. Chip-supplier and electronics receiving areas often specify new or AAA pallets built to an exact footprint with no loose boards; your account manager confirms that spec in writing. Big DCs in Southeast Austin and Hays County run Grade A 48x40s outbound and Grade B for internal moves. Lockhart's freezer docks should order new or top-grade recycled stock. Equipment crated for export, or freight crossing at Laredo, needs heat-treated (HT) pallets marked under ISPM 15, and heavy tool parts may need block pallets.
