How freight moves

I-55 and I-80 carry boxes out of the Elwood and Joliet ramps, which handle international containers moving to and from Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, Seattle and Tacoma. I-294 and I-90 serve the O'Hare side, home to the airport's cargo ramps and the industrial suburbs of Elk Grove Village and Franklin Park. The Clearing hump yard in Bedford Park sorts rail cars for the whole terminal area. On the Far South Side, the Port of Chicago at Lake Calumet links Lake Michigan to the St. Lawrence Seaway and, by the Illinois Waterway, to the Mississippi.

Transload floors near the ramps run well on recycled Grade B 48x40s: sound boards and standard size, with cosmetic wear allowed. Food plants and grocery DCs usually step up to Grade A or AAA so racking and audits go smoothly; for freezer rooms, ask that pallets stay under cover before loading. If the container is going overseas, plan on it. Many countries require solid-wood packaging to be heat-treated and marked to ISPM 15, and a box loaded in Chicago is no exception just because it reaches the coast by train. We source HT pallets from accredited heat-treatment facilities when your order calls for them.
