What Washington makes and ships

Washington at a glance

Freight for the capital region rides the Capital Beltway and splits three ways. Inside the District, warehouses and fleet yards line the New York Avenue NE corridor, while larger distribution buildings sit in suburban Maryland and in Fairfax County's Springfield, Lorton and Chantilly.

Washington makes policy more than products, so much of its freight is inbound: food and drink for restaurants, offices and institutions, retail goods, and equipment for construction and data centers. Inside the District, the Office of Planning says most production, distribution and repair land lies along New York Avenue NE, in Ivy City, Brentwood and Langdon. In Maryland, the Maryland Food Center in Jessup hosts a wholesale produce market and seafood wholesalers. In Virginia, Loudoun County calls itself home to the world's largest concentration of data centers.

Pallet demand follows those three markets. District docks are small and boxed in by truck routes and parkway bans, so buyers there have little room for spare stock and need exact delivery details. Suburban food wholesalers run standard 48x40s through cold rooms and want matching grades. Fairfax County's industrial parks mix 3PL buildings that cycle GMA-style pallets with equipment shippers who need block pallets or custom sizes for heavy crates.

Ports, rail and highways

How freight moves

The Capital Beltway (I-495) shares its eastern half with I-95, which continues north to Baltimore and south past Springfield and Lorton. I-66 runs west toward Gainesville and Front Royal, I-270 heads to Frederick, and US 50 goes east. DDOT and the National Park Service bar trucks from the GW, Rock Creek and Baltimore–Washington parkways, and from I-66 inside the Beltway. For ocean freight, the Virginia Inland Port in Front Royal rails containers to the Port of Virginia and lists DC among its markets, and the Port of Baltimore is the other close option.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Washington.

Food and beverage docks along New York Avenue NE and at the Jessup wholesale markets should order AAA recycled or new pallets that hold up in coolers and keep cases square. Fairfax County 3PL buildings mostly run recycled GMA-style 48x40s, Grade A outbound and Grade B in storage. Equipment shippers serving Loudoun's data center campuses can need block pallets or custom sizes for heavy crates. Export freight through Dulles, the Virginia Inland Port or Baltimore needs HT pallets bearing the IPPC mark from accredited facilities.

Buying pallets in Washington: questions

Can a pallet truck use the GW Parkway, Rock Creek Parkway or the BW Parkway?
No. DDOT's truck map and the National Park Service bar trucks and commercial vehicles from the GW Parkway, Rock Creek Parkway, the Baltimore–Washington Parkway and other federal parkways, and from I-66 inside the Beltway. Carriers stick to the Beltway, I-95, I-295 and the District's truck routes, so give your account manager your exact dock address.
Do you deliver inside the District, around New York Avenue NE?
Yes. We deliver truckloads to warehouses, food and beverage makers and fleet yards in Ivy City, Brentwood, Langdon and elsewhere in the District. Docks are tight and through-truck rules apply, so share your door size, loading-zone situation and receiving hours, and your account manager confirms the details in writing.
Which seaports serve exporters around Washington, and what pallet do they need?
The Virginia Inland Port in Front Royal rails containers to the Port of Virginia and lists DC among its markets, and the Port of Baltimore is the other close seaport. Air shipments use Dulles or BWI. Whatever the route, export freight on wood pallets or in crates needs HT lumber marked under ISPM 15.
Do you cover both Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland?
Yes. This page covers the whole region: Fairfax, Prince William and Loudoun counties in Virginia, Prince George's, Montgomery and Howard counties in Maryland, and the District itself. Each load is bought from a nearby independent yard, and your account manager puts grade and delivery details on the quote.

From us, by the full truckload: 616 recycled 48x40s per truck, or 520 block pallets. Call (470) 206-3352 or book a test load.

Your delivery date is on the quote, in writing, before you send a PO. Standard 48x40s often arrive in 0–2 business days. New and custom builds take longer.
