Container ships tie up at the twin ports on San Pedro Bay, and the Alameda Corridor carries their rail freight north to yards near downtown. Between the harbor and the Inland Empire sit food plants, importers' DCs and transload warehouses.

The Port of Los Angeles says it has been the busiest container port in the Western Hemisphere for a quarter century, and the Port of Long Beach works the same bay right beside it. Imported consumer goods arrive in ocean boxes, and many are stripped in Carson, Wilmington or Commerce and reloaded for trucks and trains. The county makes plenty, too. Vernon, an industrial city with very few residents, grew up on meatpacking and food plants, and the wholesale produce market on downtown's southeast edge runs refrigerated warehouses and dozens of truck bays.

Pallet demand here follows the vessel schedule. When a string of ships unloads, transload docks need empty 48x40s to build outbound loads, and they need them before the containers' free time runs out. Food plants in Vernon and Commerce draw wood at a more even pace, but freezers and washdown rooms are hard on boards. Importers' DCs along the 605 and the 60 want uniform pallets that pass store receiving. One metro holds three very different pallet buyers, often a few exits apart.

Ports, rail and highways

How freight moves

I-710, the Long Beach Freeway, is the main truck route from the port terminals north to the rail yards around Commerce and Vernon, including Hobart. The Alameda Corridor, a 20-mile rail expressway partly built in a trench, carries trains on the same path, and the ICTF near-dock yard sits at the Carson–Long Beach line. SR-91 and SR-60 run east toward the Inland Empire's distribution centers, while I-110 runs from the harbor to downtown and I-405 skirts the South Bay past LAX. Exporters across Southern California load out through these same San Pedro Bay terminals.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Los Angeles.

Transload and cross-dock work runs well on Grade B 48x40s, since most of that freight is headed for one more trip, not a retail shelf. Importer DCs shipping into big-box and grocery receiving usually step up to Grade A, and some ask for AAA when a customer audits pallet condition. Vernon's freezer and washdown rooms are better served by new or AAA pallets with sound boards. Anything that goes back out through San Pedro Bay needs heat-treated (HT) pallets stamped under ISPM 15. Your account manager confirms the grade spec in writing before the truck is booked.

For most overseas markets, yes. Many countries require wood packaging to meet ISPM 15, which means heat treatment and a legible stamp. Order HT pallets bearing the IPPC mark from accredited heat-treatment facilities, and keep domestic stock apart so it doesn't end up inside an export box by mistake.
What pallet holds up in a Vernon freezer or washdown room?+
Wet, cold rooms are tough on recycled boards. Many processors in Vernon and Commerce choose new or AAA pallets so boards stay solid and fasteners stay seated. If you run a blast freezer or wash your pallets, tell your account manager, and they confirm the wood, grade and build.
