Illinois freight starts on Chicago's rail network, which handles about one in four U.S. freight trains, and spills south to the Elwood and Joliet ramps near I-55 and I-80. Downstate, Decatur crushes soybeans and Morton cans pumpkins.

Illinois makes as much as it moves. World Business Chicago counts more than 75,000 food-manufacturing jobs in the region, from candy and snacks to meat. Will County's intermodal complex at Elwood and Joliet handles more than 3.5 million TEUs a year, by the county's count. Downstate, Decatur runs two corn wet mills and soybean plants, Illinois grows about a third of U.S. pumpkins, and the state led the nation in soybeans in 2025. Rockford machines aerospace parts, the Quad Cities build combines and planters, and the Peoria area builds heavy equipment.

Pallet demand follows those clusters. The Will County transload belt runs through standard 48x40s at a pace set by train arrivals, mostly recycled. Food and ingredient plants want stronger, tighter pallets that hold bag stacks and pass inspection. Machinery and aerospace shops need new or custom-sized builds. Pumpkin canning and grain harvest push orders up from late summer through fall across central Illinois.

How freight moves

Chicago's rail hub is the center of gravity. The CREATE program says one in four U.S. freight trains passes through Chicago, and Will County's development council calls the Elwood–Joliet intermodal complex North America's largest inland port. I-55 runs to St. Louis, I-80 crosses to the Quad Cities, I-90 ties Rockford to Chicago, and I-57 heads south to Cairo. O'Hare carries heavy air cargo, and Chicago Rockford International ranked 12th nationally by cargo landed weight in 2025. The Illinois International Port District works Lake Calumet, and America's Central Port serves Mississippi barges at Granite City.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Illinois.

In the Will County transload belt, Grade B recycled 48x40s are the default; containers leaving those ramps for overseas ports need HT pallets stamped under ISPM 15 instead. Decatur ingredient plants and Chicago food lines usually step up to Grade A, AAA or new so bags and cases sit flat. Peoria, Rockford and Quad Cities machinery calls for block pallets or new custom sizes. Pumpkin canners in Morton and Princeville should line up pallet orders before harvest. Do you deliver to transload warehouses in Elwood, Joliet and Channahon?+
Yes. We run full truckloads to warehouses around the Elwood and Joliet ramps and across Will County. Tell us which grade your crews unload onto and how door times are assigned, and your account manager confirms the details in writing before the truck goes out.
Do containers leaving the Chicago ramps for overseas ports need HT pallets?+
Yes, in nearly every case. Most countries require wood packaging that was heat-treated and marked to ISPM 15, and a missing mark can hold a container at the destination port. Order HT pallets for anything going into an export box. Domestic freight doesn't need the mark.
What pallet do Decatur ingredient plants ship on?+
Usually Grade A, AAA or new 48x40s with tight deck spacing and no raised fasteners, because bagged sweeteners, starch and protein meal tear easily. Some plants specify a different footprint for bulk bags. Send your spec sheet and your account manager matches it in writing.
Can you supply heavy-duty pallets for machinery plants around Peoria or the Quad Cities?+
Yes. Engines, castings and attachments usually need block pallets or new custom-sized builds rated for the weight. Send the footprint, load weight and how the pallet is lifted, and your account manager confirms the build spec.
Do you cover the Metro East across from St. Louis?+
Yes. We deliver to plants and warehouses in Granite City, Edwardsville and the rest of the Illinois side of the St. Louis metro. Share the dock address and the grade you need, and your account manager puts it on the quote.
