What Maine makes and ships

Maine at a glance

Maine's freight starts at the water and in the woods. Lobster and frozen wild blueberries leave coastal packing sheds, potatoes roll out of Aroostook County, and lumber and paper head south on I-95, while Portland's waterfront terminal takes reefer boxes on a weekly liner call.

Maine's economy runs on things grown, caught and cut. The Downeast barrens produce the country's largest commercial wild blueberry harvest, and nearly all of that crop is frozen for food makers. Aroostook County grows most of the state's potatoes, and a large share goes to fry and processing plants in Easton, Washburn and Mars Hill. Lobster boats work harbors from Kittery to Eastport. Inland, forest products still employ thousands, and mills such as the paper mill in Skowhegan keep investing in equipment.

Those trades make pallet demand swing with the seasons. Blueberry freezers fill from late July into early September, potato plants ramp up once the dig starts in September, and seafood dealers ship chilled and frozen product all year. Mills and converters move dense, heavy unit loads. Distance matters too. A load out of The County runs the length of I-95 in Maine before it reaches southern New England, so pallets have to hold together through a long ride.

How freight moves

I-95 is the spine. It enters at Kittery, runs as the Maine Turnpike past Portland toward Augusta, then continues through Waterville and Bangor to the Canadian border at Houlton, where it becomes New Brunswick Route 95. US 1 serves the coast. Portland's International Marine Terminal handles Maine's container traffic, with a weekly liner call and a growing refrigerated yard. Some Maine exports, lumber among them, are trucked to Boston's Conley Terminal, the region's full-service container port.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Maine.

For seafood and blueberry freezers, start with Grade A 48x40 or new pallets; cold rooms find every cracked board. Potato plants shipping frozen product to grocery and foodservice distributors usually spec Grade A GMA-style stringers. Mills with dense paper or lumber loads should look at block pallets or custom sizes. Anything bound overseas through Portland or Boston needs HT pallets stamped under ISPM 15. Loads headed into Canada at Houlton follow separate rules, so your account manager checks with the consignee before quoting.

Buying pallets in Maine: questions

Can you deliver pallets to blueberry freezers Downeast during harvest?
Yes. We arrange truckloads to freezers and packers in Washington and Hancock counties and plan around the late-July start of raking. Tell us how many trucks you expect across the season, and your account manager lines up an independent yard and confirms grade and dimensions in writing before the first load.
What pallet do Aroostook potato processors usually order?
GMA-style 48x40 stringer pallets are the usual starting point for potato shippers selling into grocery and foodservice channels, often in Grade A so they survive cold storage and the long run south. Some plants ask for new lumber or extra deck boards. We quote to your receiver's spec and write it into the quote.
Do loads crossing into New Brunswick at Houlton need heat-treated pallets?
Not always. Wood packaging moving between the U.S. and Canada is handled differently from overseas freight, and some Canadian buyers ask for HT anyway. Before we price the load, your account manager checks with your customer or customs broker and, if treatment is required, sources pallets with the ISPM 15 mark from accredited heat-treatment facilities.
Can you deliver to Portland-area warehouses that ship through the International Marine Terminal?
Yes. We deliver truckloads to warehouses and cold stores in Portland, South Portland and Westbrook. If the cargo is going into an export container, order heat-treated pallets carrying the ISPM 15 stamp, and your account manager will list the treatment mark and grade on the quote.
Where can I buy pallets in Maine?
From us, by the full truckload: 616 recycled 48x40s per truck, or 520 block pallets. Call (470) 206-3352 or book a test load.
What do pallets cost delivered to Maine?
Full-truckload prices run from $4.75 a pallet for Grade B to $10.50 for AAA, freight included. Heat-treated adds $1.00–$1.50 per pallet.
When will a load reach Maine?
Your delivery date is on the quote, in writing, before you send a PO. Standard 48x40s often arrive in 0–2 business days. New and custom builds take longer.
