What Louisville makes and ships
Louisville at a glance
Louisville moves freight by air, river and road: a worldwide parcel air hub runs at Louisville Muhammad Ali International, barges work Jefferson Riverport on the Ohio, and I-64, I-65 and I-71 meet downtown. Distilleries, an appliance complex and two auto plants add factory freight.
Louisville's freight base mixes logistics and manufacturing. A parcel carrier's worldwide air hub sits at the airport, and business parks around it and south along I-65 into Bullitt County have filled with distribution buildings; the county has added more than 6 million square feet since 2000. Two auto assembly plants and a large home-appliance complex operate inside the city limits. Bourbon is the signature product, with about a third of all bourbon made in Louisville and distilleries in the city and Shively.
Each of those pulls pallets differently. Parcel-linked DCs and 3PLs near the airport burn through standard 48x40s and need them sorted by grade. Distilleries ship cased bottles on pallets that must stack evenly and stand up to warehouse forklifts. Auto and appliance suppliers run fixed footprints and returnable racks, often block or custom. Jefferson Riverport on the Ohio adds barge freight that can be heavy and awkward to pallet.

How freight moves
I-64, I-65 and I-71 meet near downtown, with I-264, the Henry Watterson Expressway, and I-265, the Gene Snyder Freeway, as inner and outer loops. The Lewis and Clark Bridge, opened in December 2016, joined the two halves of I-265 across the Ohio between Prospect, Ky., and Utica, Ind. Jefferson Riverport handles barge freight in southwest Louisville, a rail intermodal terminal serves the city, and the airport's parcel hub moves air cargo. The Ohio River leads on to the Mississippi and the Gulf.

Which pallet to order
The right pallet grade for Louisville.
Distillery bottling lines should run AAA or new pallets with flat top decks so tall case loads wrap and stack true. Airport-area 3PLs and Bullitt County DCs get good value from Grade A recycled 48x40s, keeping Grade B for one-way freight. Auto and appliance suppliers need block or custom builds matched to the customer's print. Export freight flown out through the air hub or railed to a coastal port needs HT pallets marked under ISPM 15. Your account manager writes up the grade spec for your approval.
