What Omaha makes and ships
Omaha at a glance
Omaha freight starts with meat and rail. Beef, pork and poultry plants from Omaha to Fremont ship cartons nationwide and overseas, while I-80, I-29 and four freight railroads meeting in Council Bluffs carry everything else across the Missouri River.
In 1955 Omaha's Union Stockyards overtook Chicago's as the nation's meatpacking center. The yards closed in 1999, but meat still drives freight. One Omaha beef packer says it ships to every state and more than 70 countries, a hog-processing plant is one of Fremont's largest employers, and a poultry complex there runs its own hatchery and feed mill. Across the river, Council Bluffs makes frozen foods, dairy products and plastics. Omaha is also the headquarters city of a transcontinental railroad and a center for insurance and finance.
That keeps Omaha pallet demand tied to cold chains. Boxed beef, pork and chicken leave in refrigerated trailers for grocery and foodservice DCs, and export cartons add heat-treated stock to the mix. Frozen-food and dairy plants need pallets that hold up in freezers and on wet floors. The chamber's development arm says truck transportation is almost twice as concentrated here as nationally, so cross-docks and carrier terminals cycle through plenty of standard 48x40s. Equipment makers add heavier builds.

How freight moves
I-80 crosses the Missouri River between Omaha and Council Bluffs, running west to Lincoln and east toward Des Moines. I-29 follows the Iowa bank north to Sioux City and south to Kansas City, while I-480 and I-680 serve the core and northern suburbs and US-75 runs north–south. US-30 and US-275 reach Fremont, about 35 miles northwest. The first transcontinental line was built west from Omaha, four freight railroads connect in Council Bluffs, and industrial sites have Missouri River access. Eppley Airfield, three miles northeast of downtown, handles air cargo.

Which pallet to order
The right pallet grade for Omaha.
Meat plants usually want AAA or new 48x40s with tight decks that stand up in coolers, and frozen-food and dairy plants ask for the same. Cross-docks, carrier terminals and dry-goods warehouses mostly run Grade B recycled, stepping up to Grade A for retail receivers. Equipment and packaging-systems makers need block pallets or custom sizes. Boxed beef and other cartons bound overseas should ride heat-treated (HT) pallets stamped under ISPM 15. Your account manager confirms the grade spec in writing before a load ships.
