What Indiana makes and ships

Indiana at a glance

Indiana's motto is the Crossroads of America, and the freight backs it up. I-65, I-69, I-70 and I-74 meet at Indianapolis, steel mills line Lake Michigan, and three state ports reach the Great Lakes and the Ohio River.

Indiana is a making state. Mills in Gary, Burns Harbor and East Chicago roll a large share of the nation's steel. Elkhart County bills itself as the RV Capital of the World, and Warsaw calls itself the Orthopedic Capital. The state agriculture department ranks Indiana first in wood office furniture, hardwood veneer, ducks and popcorn, and second in processing tomatoes. Lafayette runs a corn wet mill, and Fort Wayne is a defense-industry center. Around Indianapolis, Plainfield and Lebanon hold big warehouse districts.

So Indiana buys pallets in two very different ways. Steel, RV parts, furniture and heavy components need strong, often custom-sized pallets or skids built around coil, frames and cabinets. The Indianapolis DC ring runs standard 48x40s, mostly recycled, at a pace that climbs toward peak retail season. Food processors and export cargo moving through the Ports of Indiana add demand for higher grades and heat-treated stock.

How freight moves

Indianapolis sits where I-65, I-69, I-70 and I-74 meet the I-465 loop, and since 2024 I-69 runs as a finished interstate south to Evansville. Up north, I-80 and I-94 share the Borman Expressway through Gary, and the Indiana Toll Road carries I-90, joined by I-80 east of Lake Station, past Elkhart. Indianapolis International hosts a major hub for an express carrier. The Ports of Indiana run Burns Harbor on Lake Michigan, with a route to the St. Lawrence Seaway, plus Jeffersonville and Mount Vernon on the Ohio River for barge traffic toward the Gulf.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Indiana.

For the Indianapolis DC ring, Grade B recycled 48x40s cover most outbound freight, with Grade A where retailers reject repairs. Northwest Indiana steel and Fort Wayne components call for block pallets or new heavy-duty builds. Elkhart County RV suppliers and furniture plants mostly need custom sizes. Popcorn and tomato packers usually want Grade A, AAA or new pallets with smooth decks. Cargo leaving Burns Harbor for a foreign port needs HT pallets stamped under ISPM 15. Each spec gets written confirmation from your account manager before loading.

Buying pallets in Indiana: questions

Can you deliver to warehouses in Plainfield and Lebanon?
Yes. Full truckloads go to DCs across the Indianapolis ring, including Plainfield by the airport and Lebanon on I-65. Send the building address, how appointments are booked and the pallet grade on your current orders, and your account manager confirms every detail in writing.
What pallets should RV suppliers in Elkhart County order?
Usually custom sizes or skids built around the part, from cabinets and windows to axles and fiberglass panels. Share the footprint, weight and how the pallet moves around your plant, and your account manager writes up a build spec for approval before the first load.
What pallet works for steel coil and plate from Northwest Indiana?
Block pallets or heavy new builds with extra deck boards, or custom skids cradled to the coil or plate. Light stringer pallets crush under steel. Send the weight and footprint, and your account manager confirms the spec before production.
Do shipments through Burns Harbor need heat-treated pallets?
If the cargo is bound for a foreign port, yes in nearly every case. Most destinations require wood packaging treated and marked under ISPM 15. Domestic lake, barge and truck freight doesn't. Tell us the destination and your account manager spells out the treatment on the quote.
Where can I buy pallets in Indiana?
From us, by the full truckload: 616 recycled 48x40s per truck, or 520 block pallets. Call (470) 206-3352 or book a test load.
What do pallets cost delivered to Indiana?
Full-truckload prices run from $4.75 a pallet for Grade B to $10.50 for AAA, freight included. Heat-treated adds $1.00–$1.50 per pallet.
When will a load reach Indiana?
Your delivery date is on the quote, in writing, before you send a PO. Standard 48x40s often arrive in 0–2 business days. New and custom builds take longer.
