What Michigan makes and ships

Michigan trucks cross to Ontario on the Ambassador, Blue Water and Gordie Howe International bridges, then fan out on I-94 and I-96. Fruit Ridge apples, Traverse City tart cherries and Zeeland office furniture fill the westbound trailers.

Southeast Michigan builds vehicles and the parts inside them, so stampings, castings and molded plastics move between Detroit-area plants and Ontario around the clock. That's background here, not the whole picture. West Michigan makes office furniture in Grand Rapids, Holland and Zeeland, and Battle Creek still runs cereal lines. Michigan ranks among the top three apple states, with packers clustered on the Fruit Ridge, and the Traverse City region helps Michigan grow roughly three-quarters of the nation's tart cherries.

How freight moves

Two bridges cross the Detroit River to Windsor: the Ambassador, and the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which opened to traffic in July 2026 and ties I-75 straight to Ontario's Highway 401. At Port Huron, the Blue Water Bridge links I-69 and I-94 to Sarnia, and in 2025 it carried more commercial trucks than the Ambassador. Freight trains use tunnels under both rivers. Inland, I-96 runs from Detroit past Lansing and Grand Rapids to Muskegon, US-131 serves Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, and I-75 heads north to Flint and Saginaw. The Port of Monroe is Michigan's only Lake Erie port.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Michigan.

Cross-border freight is the first question in Michigan. Canada exempts wood packaging made from U.S. or Canadian lumber and shipped directly from the continental U.S. from ISPM 15 treatment and marking, but cargo that continues overseas, or a receiver with its own policy, may still call for HT pallets stamped under ISPM 15. Furniture lines should look at new or custom sizes. Apple and cherry packers using cold storage do well with AAA or new 48x40s, or block pallets under heavy bins. Border cross-docks usually run Grade B recycled. Your account manager puts the agreed grade in writing.

Not for Canada's border rules when the pallets are made from U.S. or Canadian wood and ship directly from the U.S.; that trade is exempt from ISPM 15 marking. Freight that will be re-shipped overseas, or a receiver with its own policy, can still require HT pallets. Tell us the final destination and your account manager confirms the spec in writing.
What pallets do Fruit Ridge apple packers order?+
Most want sturdy 48x40s, often AAA or new, that hold up in controlled-atmosphere storage and keep cartons square from harvest into the next summer. Heavier bin loads may call for block pallets. Share stack height and storage conditions, and you'll get the build confirmed.
Can you deliver to warehouses near Detroit Metro Airport in Romulus?+
Yes. Full truckloads go to warehouses and cross-docks in Romulus, Taylor and along I-94 and I-75. Give us the address, the cross-dock's scheduling process and the grade you cycle today, and your account manager puts every detail in writing before the truck is booked.
Do furniture plants in Zeeland and Holland use custom pallet sizes?+
Many do. Boxed desks, seating and panel systems often need a footprint other than 48x40, and some lines accept new lumber only. Send the carton dimensions and weight, and your account manager drafts a custom spec for your sign-off before the first load is built.
