What Vermont makes and ships

Vermont at a glance

Vermont ships cheese, butter, maple syrup and specialty food, plus chips from the semiconductor fab in Essex Junction. Freight rides I-89 and I-91, and from Burlington the Highgate Springs crossing and Montreal sit far closer than Boston.

Dairy is the core of Vermont's farm economy. A 2025 Agency of Agriculture report put it at about 58 percent of agricultural sales, with more than 150 processors turning milk into cheese, butter, yogurt and ice cream. Vermont also makes more than half of the country's maple syrup, according to USDA figures for 2026. Manufacturing clusters in Chittenden County, where the Essex Junction fab is being upgraded with federal support to make gallium nitride chips. Canada is the state's largest export market.

That makes Vermont pallet demand small-batch, seasonal and often cross-border. Sugarmakers and packers fill drums and jugs after the late-winter run, cheesemakers ship aged wheels and blocks all year, and specialty food companies send mixed loads to distributors in New England and New York. Because Canada buys more Vermont goods than any other country, border paperwork comes up often. Rural docks, farm lanes and steep grades also shape what kind of truck can reach a building.

How freight moves

I-89 runs from the New Hampshire line past White River Junction, Montpelier and Burlington to the Highgate Springs port of entry, opposite Saint-Armand, Quebec. The GSA counts Highgate Springs among New England's busiest crossings, and its rebuild is slated for completion in 2029. I-91 follows the Connecticut River north from Brattleboro to Derby Line, where it becomes Quebec Autoroute 55. Vermont has no seaport. The nearest container ports are Montreal to the north and Boston and New York–New Jersey to the south.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Vermont.

Dairy and maple shippers selling to grocery chains should order GMA-style 48x40 pallets in Grade A, or AAA when a retailer is strict about appearance. Cheese caves and coolers are hard on repaired boards, so skip Grade B for cold storage. Tech and machinery plants in Chittenden County do better with new pallets or custom builds. For freight crossing into Quebec, wood-packaging rules differ from overseas exports; your account manager checks what the buyer needs and quotes HT bearing the IPPC mark when it's required.

Buying pallets in Vermont: questions

What pallets should Vermont maple packers ship drums on?
Syrup drums are dense, so packers do best with Grade A or new 48x40 pallets that have solid deck coverage and sound stringers. Retail cases going to grocery DCs ride GMA-style 48x40s. Tell us how you load drums and cases, and your account manager confirms the build in writing.
Can you deliver to cheesemakers and creameries outside Chittenden County?
Yes. We deliver by the truckload statewide, including Franklin, Orleans, Addison and Windsor counties. Farm drives and back roads can limit trailer access, so describe turns, grades and dock height when you order; your account manager plans the truck and confirms details before delivery.
Do pallets going to Quebec through Highgate Springs have to be heat-treated?
That depends on your buyer and the goods. Cross-border wood packaging between the U.S. and Canada isn't treated the same way as overseas freight, and some Quebec importers want HT regardless. Ask your customs broker or customer; once you know, your account manager sources HT pallets marked under ISPM 15 if needed.
Can you supply new or custom pallets for tech plants near Essex Junction?
Yes. New lumber and custom dimensions are the usual choice for high-value equipment, tooling and materials. Send drawings or the load footprint and weight. An independent yard builds to that spec, and HT stamping is added when the shipment leaves the country.
Where can I buy pallets in Vermont?
From us, by the full truckload: 616 recycled 48x40s per truck, or 520 block pallets. Call (470) 206-3352 or book a test load.
What do pallets cost delivered to Vermont?
Full-truckload prices run from $4.75 a pallet for Grade B to $10.50 for AAA, freight included. Heat-treated adds $1.00–$1.50 per pallet.
When will a load reach Vermont?
Your delivery date is on the quote, in writing, before you send a PO. Standard 48x40s often arrive in 0–2 business days. New and custom builds take longer.
