What Albany makes and ships
Albany at a glance
Albany's freight gathers where the Thruway, the Northway and the Hudson River come together. Ships and barges tie up at the Port of Albany–Rensselaer, freight trains sort at Selkirk south of town, and trucks fan out toward Montreal, Boston and Buffalo.
State government, hospitals and colleges carry most of the Capital Region's payroll, but its freight comes from a shorter list. A chipmaker moved its headquarters in 2021 to its wafer fab on the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Malta. Steam turbines are still built in Schenectady. On the river, the Port of Albany–Rensselaer regularly handles cocoa beans, sugar, molasses, grain, steel, wood pulp and heavy-lift pieces, and a Schenectady-based supermarket chain supplies every one of its stores from a single warehouse in Rotterdam.
That mix splits pallet orders three ways. Fab and turbine freight is valuable, heavy or both, so it rides on new pallets or custom skids, and anything bound overseas needs heat treatment. Grocery warehousing burns through standard 48x40s that must rack, wrap and stack evenly. Port sheds and transload crews want stout pallets for bagged and boxed cargo pulled off ships, barges and railcars and staged under cover.

How freight moves
The Thruway (I-90) and I-87 meet at Exit 24 on Albany's western edge. I-87 runs north as the Northway to the Champlain–Lacolle crossing and Autoroute 15 into Montreal, and south toward New York City. I-88 starts in Rotterdam and heads southwest to Binghamton, while I-787 follows the river from Albany to Troy. The Selkirk rail yard, about eight miles south, is a major classification hump. Albany International Airport in Colonie is an airport of entry. Export containers generally head down the Thruway to the Port of New York and New Jersey.

Which pallet to order
The right pallet grade for Albany.
Match the pallet to the building. Grocery and retail warehouses around Rotterdam, Colonie and Exit 24 mostly run Grade A recycled 48x40 stringers outbound and keep Grade B for storage and returns. Chip-fab suppliers in Saratoga County lean toward new or AAA pallets with tight deck spacing and no loose fasteners. Turbine and heavy-equipment shippers in Schenectady should spec block pallets or custom skids rated for the load. Anything headed overseas, by container through New York or by heavy lift off the Albany wharf, needs HT pallets marked under ISPM 15.
