What Syracuse makes and ships

Syracuse at a glance

Syracuse sits where the Thruway crosses I-81, which spans New York from the Pennsylvania line to the Thousand Islands Bridge. Downtown, the old I-81 viaduct is giving way to a street grid, and north of the city a memory-chip campus is rising in Clay.

Hospitals, Syracuse University and government employ the most people in Onondaga County, so the freight comes from plants spread around the edges. Construction began in January 2026 on a memory-chip complex at White Pine Commerce Park in Clay, and the company expects initial wafer output from its first fab in 2030. Two aerospace and defense contractors rank among the county's larger employers. A large brewery has operated just east of Baldwinsville since the mid-1970s, and produce wholesalers lease commission houses at the Central New York Regional Market on the city's north side.

For pallet buyers, that adds up to two clocks running at once. The chip site will pull building materials, equipment and supplier freight for years, much of it on new or custom pallets that suit costly gear. Brewery and produce docks work every week, using standard 48x40s that need to stack flat and shrug off wet floors and forklift traffic. Defense and electronics plants add a third pattern: fewer pallets, built tighter.

How freight moves

I-81 and the Thruway (I-90) meet just north of the city. The Federal Highway Administration has approved making the old I-481 loop east of downtown the new I-81, moving through traffic away from the viaduct while the community grid is built. I-690 crosses the city east–west. North, I-81 ends at the Thousand Islands Bridge, which leads to Ontario's Highway 401 over Highway 137. Syracuse Hancock International Airport has parcel air cargo. The Port of Oswego on Lake Ontario handles aluminum, steel, potash and grain, and ocean containers can route through the Port of New York and New Jersey.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Syracuse.

For the brewery and the Regional Market, order Grade A recycled 48x40s, or AAA where pallets ride conveyors or sit in coolers; Grade B covers storage and loads to receivers that never return pallets. Chip-site contractors and defense plants should start with new pallets or custom sizes and ask about block bases for heavy tool skids. Loads going overseas need HT pallets carrying the ISPM 15 stamp. Freight into Ontario over the Thousand Islands Bridge can usually skip treatment if the wood is U.S. or Canadian in origin and the paperwork says so.

Buying pallets in Syracuse: questions

Can you deliver to contractors and suppliers working at the chip site in Clay?
Yes, as long as the site's delivery rules allow a full truckload. Big construction campuses often require gate passes, set truck routes and booked arrival times, so send those rules with your order. Your account manager confirms the pallet spec and delivery details in writing before the truck is scheduled.
Do loads crossing the Thousand Islands Bridge into Ontario need heat-treated pallets?
Usually not. The U.S. and Canada exempt each other's wood packaging from ISPM 15 when the wood originated in either country and the import documents carry the required origin statement. Freight that continues overseas does need it, so tell your account manager the final destination and we'll quote HT pallets when they're required.
What pallet works for a brewery or beverage warehouse near Baldwinsville?
Most beverage docks run 48x40 stringer pallets in Grade A or better, because full beer loads are heavy and wrapped tight. Ask for consistent board thickness and intact lead boards. If your distributors send pallets back for reuse, Grade B may cover the return loop.
Will the I-81 changes affect pallet deliveries in Syracuse?
Through traffic is being shifted onto the former I-481 loop, now designated I-81, while the downtown viaduct area is rebuilt. Carriers plan around closures, but give your account manager your exact dock address and any local access notes so the driver takes the right exit and approach.
Where can I buy pallets in Syracuse, NY?
From us, by the full truckload: 616 recycled 48x40s per truck, or 520 block pallets. Call (470) 206-3352 or book a test load.
What do pallets cost delivered to Syracuse, NY?
Full-truckload prices run from $4.75 a pallet for Grade B to $10.50 for AAA, freight included. Heat-treated adds $1.00–$1.50 per pallet.
When will a load reach Syracuse, NY?
Your delivery date is on the quote, in writing, before you send a PO. Standard 48x40s often arrive in 0–2 business days. New and custom builds take longer.
