Greensboro at a glance
What Greensboro makes and moves.
The Triad was built on textiles, tobacco and furniture, and all three still show up at the loading docks. Greensboro remains a textile center, with yarn and apparel firms headquartered here, and two heavy-truck makers keep their headquarters in the city. High Point hosts its home-furnishings market every April and October. The newest freight source is the battery plant on the Greensboro–Randolph megasite, which began shipping packs to vehicle assembly plants in mid-2025. Aerospace builders have also settled on the grounds of Piedmont Triad International Airport.
That mix splits pallet demand three ways. Furniture shippers need smooth-decked pallets and odd footprints ahead of each market. Mills and apparel warehouses move light cartons in high counts and wear through recycled 48x40s. Battery and aerospace suppliers buy to an engineering print, often block construction for dense, costly parts. Trade, transportation and utilities employ more Greensboro-area workers than any other sector in BLS counts, so warehouses on I-40 and I-85 add a constant base of stringer demand underneath it all.

High Point furniture shippers
Furniture, hosiery and yacht building were High Point's traditional trades, and the city has since grown into a distribution and logistics center as well. Makers and importers move case goods, upholstery and lighting into showrooms before the April and October markets, then out to retailers. Finished wood scuffs easily, so smooth top decks and custom footprints matter.

Megasite battery plant
The battery plant on the Greensboro–Randolph megasite began shipping packs for hybrid and electric vehicles in mid-2025. Cell modules, enclosures and finished packs are heavy and expensive, and the suppliers feeding the site work to tight packaging specs. Expect block pallets or custom sizes built to a drawing, frequently in new lumber.

Triad yarn and apparel mills
The Triad is still a national center for textile manufacturing, and several textile and apparel companies keep headquarters in Greensboro. Yarn packages, fabric rolls and boxed garments are light but bulky, so mills cycle standard 48x40 stringers in large counts and care more about even deck height than heavy lumber.

I-40 and I-85 warehouses
Large trucking, logistics and warehousing businesses grew out of the Triad's furniture and textile trades. Distribution buildings now sit along I-40, I-85 and the Urban Loop between Kernersville and Burlington, shipping retail and grocery orders to stores across the region. Their docks run recycled Grade A and Grade B 48x40s and want them sorted before delivery.

How freight moves
Ports, rail and interstates.
I-40 and I-85 run together east of Greensboro toward Burlington, then part ways, with I-40 heading west to Winston-Salem and I-85 southwest to Charlotte. I-73 crosses the city north to south past the airport, and I-74 links Randleman with High Point and Winston-Salem. The I-840 Urban Loop was completed in January 2023. A main rail line between Washington and Atlanta runs through town, and the Pomona freight yard sits just west of downtown. Express carriers fly cargo through PTI. The in-state seaport is Wilmington, reached by I-40 or by rail from the Charlotte Inland Port.

Which pallet to order
The right grade for Greensboro.
Furniture makers and importers should ask for custom sizes or new pallets with smooth top decks, since a raised nail can tear upholstery or mark a finish. Textile and apparel docks get good value from Grade B 48x40 stringers on one-way trips and Grade A when customers inspect inbound. Battery and aerospace suppliers usually need block pallets, often new, built to a drawing. I-40 and I-85 distribution centers run Grade A recycled outbound. Containers bound overseas through Wilmington, Charleston or Norfolk need HT pallets marked under ISPM 15. Your account manager confirms the spec in writing.
