The state's freight starts on farms and factory floors. Bladen, Sampson and Duplin counties raise and process hogs and poultry. The Port of Wilmington handles containers and refrigerated cargo, and a rail terminal at Rocky Mount loads containers beside I-95.

Each of those flows wants a different pallet. Meat plants and sweet potato packers run cold, damp docks and need boards that won't break down in coolers. Furniture makers need smooth decks and odd sizes so finished pieces don't scuff. The I-85 distribution centers between Charlotte and Greensboro go through standard recycled 48x40s for store orders, while exporters shipping through Wilmington need heat treatment on every wood pallet.

How freight moves

I-77 and I-85 cross just north of Uptown Charlotte, and a regional intermodal cargo facility sits on the grounds of Charlotte Douglas International Airport. I-40 runs from Hickory through the Triad and Raleigh to Wilmington, where the state port handles containers and reefer cargo. The Carolina Connector terminal at Rocky Mount moves containers between rail and I-95 trucks. Eastern exporters use Wilmington, and Charlotte-area shippers can also reach the Port of Charleston by way of I-77 and I-26.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for North Carolina.

Match the pallet to the dock. Meat and poultry plants on the coastal plain usually want AAA or new 48x40s that hold up in freezers. Sweet potato packers do well with Grade A. Hickory furniture plants often need custom sizes with smooth top decks. I-85 DCs ship on Grade A or Grade B recycled stringers, which give partial 4-way entry. Anything leaving through Wilmington or Charleston in wood packaging needs HT pallets stamped under ISPM 15. Grades vary between yards, so your account manager confirms the spec in writing.

What pallets do Duplin and Sampson county meat plants ask for?+
Most want AAA recycled or new 48x40s with tight deckboards that survive freezers and wash-down rooms. Some also set a lumber species or a moisture limit. Give your account manager your QA requirements and they go on the order in writing.
Can you deliver to warehouses near the Rocky Mount rail terminal?+
Yes. Distribution sites around Rocky Mount, Wilson and the I-95 corridor in Edgecombe and Nash counties are on our delivery map. Send the dock address and the pallet you use, and your account manager confirms grade and quantity.
Do Hickory furniture plants use standard 48x40 pallets?+
Some do for parts and small cartons, but many need custom sizes that fit a sofa, dresser or table box. Share the footprint, the weight and whether the top deck must be smooth, and an independent yard near your plant builds to that drawing.
Do farm exports leaving through Wilmington need heat-treated pallets?+
Yes, if the pallets travel overseas with the shipment. Countries that follow ISPM 15 require heat treatment and the stamp. Flag export loads separately from domestic ones so your account manager orders HT pallets from an accredited heat-treatment facility for just those trucks.
Can you serve DCs along I-85 between Charlotte and Greensboro?+
Yes. Warehouses in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Rowan, Davidson and Guilford counties are on our map. Most ship on Grade A or B 48x40 stringers. If your racking or automation needs block pallets, tell your account manager before the first load is written up.
