McAllen at a glance
What McAllen makes and moves.
Since NAFTA took effect in 1994, the local economy has leaned on cross-border trade, health care, retail and tourism more than on farming. Reynosa, directly south, is a large manufacturing center whose plants assemble components shipped from the U.S. and send finished goods back. McAllen commissioned one of the country's first inland foreign-trade zones in 1973, between the city and the river. Around it, the Valley still grows grapefruit, vegetables, cotton, sorghum and sugarcane, and citrus comes off the trees each winter.
Those flows set two pallet calendars. Produce importers and cold-storage warehouses near the Pharr bridge turn pallets constantly as Mexican fruit is inspected, re-sorted and loaded for grocery distribution centers farther north. Valley packers add a winter push during grapefruit season. On the factory side, suppliers in McAllen, Pharr and Mission stage components for Reynosa plants, and any wood packaging crossing south has to clear Mexico's import rules.
Who buys pallets here
The docks that run on pallets in McAllen.
- 01
Pharr bridge produce importers
McAllen's economic development corporation calls the area the number one port of entry for agricultural products, and avocados and berries are among the produce crossing the Pharr–Reynosa bridge. Importers and cold-storage operators near the bridge re-pallet, inspect and ship that fruit north, so their pallets have to pass grocery receiving checks.

Valley citrus and onion sheds
Grapefruit makes up more than 70% of the Valley's citrus crop, and the region ranks among the most important vegetable-growing areas in Texas. The sweet 1015 onion, named for its October 15 planting date, is a Valley specialty. Packing sheds across Hidalgo County need pallets that carry wet cartons through cooling and long hauls.

Foreign-trade zone warehouses
McAllen's foreign-trade zone sits between the city and Reynosa and adds a site at the airport for air cargo. Warehouses there store goods, kit parts and process orders for cross-border manufacturers, and those docks go through standard 48x40 stringer pallets quickly, sorting them into outbound and in-house grades.

Reynosa plant suppliers
Components move from U.S. suppliers into Reynosa assembly plants and come back as finished goods; televisions and computer monitors ranked among Pharr's top imports in 2019. Suppliers staging parts in McAllen and Pharr often ship heavy or odd-sized kits on block or custom pallets, and southbound wood must meet Mexico's packaging rules.

How freight moves
Ports, rail and interstates.
I-2 follows US 83 east–west through Mission, McAllen and Pharr, and I-69C follows US 281 north from Pharr through Edinburg. Loaded trucks from Reynosa enter at the Pharr–Reynosa International Bridge, reached from US 281 by Spur 600; northbound trucks were moved off the McAllen–Hidalgo bridge in 1996, and the Anzalduas bridge near Mission lets only empty trucks travel south. McAllen Miller International Airport carries passengers and has a foreign-trade-zone site for air cargo. The nearest deepwater seaport is the Port of Brownsville, at the Valley's eastern end, with rail links into northeast Mexico.

Which pallet to order
The right grade for McAllen.
Anything crossing south into Mexico should ride heat-treated (HT) pallets bearing the IPPC mark; Mexico generally applies that standard to wood packaging, and your customs broker confirms the current rule for each shipment. Produce coolers and citrus sheds do better with new or AAA pallets that stay square under wet cartons and pass grocery inspection. Foreign-trade-zone warehouses can run recycled Grade A 48x40s outbound and Grade B for internal storage. Heavy kits for Reynosa plants may need block pallets or custom sizes. Your account manager confirms the grade spec in writing.
