What San Jose makes and ships

San Jose at a glance

San Jose's industrial parks build chip tools, hardware prototypes and food, and the city counts manufacturing as nearly a fifth of its jobs. Freight moves by truck on US-101, I-880 and I-680, with Oakland as the nearest container seaport.

A century ago, Santa Clara County canned most of California's fruit and vegetables, and the last San Jose cannery closed in the late 1990s. Orchards gave way to semiconductor and hardware companies, and city data puts manufacturing at about 18 percent of San Jose's workforce. Much of that work sits in flex and R&D buildings in North San Jose, Milpitas and Santa Clara. South of the city, Gilroy goes by the nickname Garlic Capital of the World, and garlic from farms across the state is still peeled and packed there.

That makes the South Bay a different pallet market from the rest of the Bay Area. Many shippers here move high-value equipment in modest counts, and it rides on block or custom pallets sized to a crate. Broker reports say new industrial projects are courting advanced manufacturers and food producers, which adds 48x40 demand. Gilroy and Morgan Hill processors buy by the season. Exporters truck north to Oakland, so heat-treated stock matters too.

How freight moves

US-101 is the main north–south truck route, running up the Peninsula and south through Morgan Hill and Gilroy toward Salinas. I-880 and I-680 head north into the East Bay, and I-880 is the direct run to the Port of Oakland, the nearest container seaport. SR-237 links Milpitas with Sunnyvale and Mountain View along the bay's southern edge, and SR-152 crosses Pacheco Pass from Gilroy to I-5 in the Central Valley. SR-87 runs from downtown past the airport to US-101, and I-280 heads west toward Cupertino.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for San Jose.

Equipment builders in North San Jose and Milpitas should spec block pallets or custom sizes matched to the crate footprint, and use new wood for anything high-value or sensitive to shock. Exports trucked to Oakland need HT pallets stamped under ISPM 15 from accredited heat-treatment facilities. Distribution buildings in Edenvale and along US-101 run fine on Grade A or Grade B 48x40s. Gilroy and Morgan Hill food plants shipping to grocery DCs usually want Grade A or AAA. Your account manager writes up grade, size and wood type before anything ships.

Buying pallets in San Jose: questions

Can you supply custom-size pallets for semiconductor equipment crates?
Yes. Send the crate footprint, load weight and how the unit is lifted, and we source custom sizes or block pallets from a yard that builds them. For tools leaving the country, we add heat treatment and the ISPM 15 stamp, and your account manager confirms the build in writing.
Do South Bay exporters trucking to the Port of Oakland need heat-treated pallets?
If the cargo is going overseas, plan on it. Most importing countries require wood packaging to meet ISPM 15, which means heat treatment and a legible mark. Keep HT pallets for export lanes and standard stock for domestic freight, so the two never mix on the floor.
Do you deliver to food processors in Gilroy and Morgan Hill?
Yes. We deliver full truckloads to plants along US-101 in Morgan Hill and Gilroy and out SR-152. Tell your account manager when your harvest or packing season starts and how many loads you expect, and they line up quotes before the rush.
What pallet should an Edenvale or Milpitas distribution center order?
Most DCs run Grade B 48x40s for internal moves and Grade A for outbound freight that goes to stores or other DCs. If a customer audits pallet condition, step up to AAA. Your account manager puts which grade fits each lane and puts the spec on the quote.
Where can I buy pallets in San Jose, CA?
From us, by the full truckload: 616 recycled 48x40s per truck, or 520 block pallets. Call (470) 206-3352 or book a test load.
What do pallets cost delivered to San Jose, CA?
Full-truckload prices run from $4.75 a pallet for Grade B to $10.50 for AAA, freight included. Heat-treated adds $1.00–$1.50 per pallet.
When will a load reach San Jose, CA?
Your delivery date is on the quote, in writing, before you send a PO. Standard 48x40s often arrive in 0–2 business days. New and custom builds take longer.
