California at a glance

California moves freight through three separate systems: San Pedro Bay container terminals feeding Inland Empire warehouses, the Port of Oakland serving the north, and Central Valley packing sheds strung along I-5 and Highway 99. Pallet needs differ sharply across them.

The state agriculture department reports that California grows nearly half of the country's vegetables and more than three-quarters of its fruits and nuts, with milk, almonds, cattle, grapes, lettuce and pistachios leading its 2025 commodity list. Kern, Fresno and Tulare rank among its biggest farm counties. Imports land at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach on San Pedro Bay, then ride the Alameda Corridor rail line or trucks inland to warehouses from Ontario to Riverside. Oakland and the Port of Hueneme add container, produce and auto traffic.

That split creates two kinds of pallet demand. Port-driven warehouses need 48x40 stringer pallets to rebuild floor-loaded import containers before freight heads to retail DCs across the West. Valley packers need pallets matched to each crop calendar, from the summer tomato pack to the fall nut harvest, and their buyers often specify board condition. Exporters sending almonds, pistachios, dairy, wine and walnuts abroad add heat-treated pallets to the mix, because most importing countries apply ISPM 15 to wood packaging.

How freight moves

Two rail-heavy port complexes anchor the state. Boxes leave San Pedro Bay on the Alameda Corridor, a dedicated freight line linking the Los Angeles and Long Beach terminals to the transcontinental rail network, or by truck on I-710 and State Route 60 toward the Inland Empire. Oakland's four marine terminals and two intermodal rail facilities serve Northern California, with I-880 and I-580 reaching the valley. I-5 and Highway 99 carry harvest freight the length of the Central Valley. Otay Mesa handles commercial trucks from Baja California, and Hueneme serves the Central Coast.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for California.

Inland Empire transloaders and retail suppliers mostly run GMA-style 48x40 stringer pallets: Grade B for internal moves and floor-stacked freight, Grade A or AAA for deliveries to retail DCs. Valley packers moving product into pre-coolers often pick new pallets or Grade A recycled stock with intact deckboards. Almond, pistachio and walnut exporters loading at Oakland or Long Beach need heat-treated (HT) pallets stamped under ISPM 15. Heavy industrial users in the Los Angeles basin can order block pallets for true four-way entry, or custom sizes. Your account manager confirms the grade spec in writing.

    Makes it a crime for an unauthorized person to possess a merchandise pallet marked to identify its owner, or for anyone but the owner to obliterate that marking. Penalties follow the Penal Code's theft-punishment sections.

Buying pallets in California: questions

Can you deliver pallets to transload warehouses in Ontario and Fontana?+
Yes. We arrange truckload deliveries to Inland Empire cross-docks and transload buildings. Tell us roughly how many containers you strip, what your downstream retail customers accept and when your doors are open, and your account manager puts grade and size on the quote before the order is placed.
Do almond and pistachio exporters shipping through Oakland need heat-treated pallets?+
In most cases, yes. Most importing countries require wood packaging that meets ISPM 15, which means heat treatment and an IPPC stamp. Ask your forwarder or the importer which rules apply at the destination, and we will quote HT pallets bearing the IPPC mark with the spec confirmed.
Can I line up pallets ahead of the tomato and nut harvests?+
Yes. Packers and hullers in Fresno, Kern and Tulare counties can place orders before the season peaks and schedule deliveries against their own pack plan. Give your account manager expected volumes by week and your dock hours so supply is arranged before the rush rather than in the middle of it.
Do you cover San Diego shippers near the Otay Mesa crossing?+
Yes. We deliver to warehouses and cross-border logistics docks around Otay Mesa. If the pallets will travel into Mexico under your freight, tell your account manager up front so the quote covers heat-treated pallets marked under ISPM 15, which Mexico applies to imported wood packaging.
Can you supply cold-storage and food docks around Stockton and Sacramento?+
Yes. We arrange deliveries to processors, cold-storage warehouses and distribution buildings across San Joaquin and Sacramento counties. Send your pallet spec or a photo of what you use today, and your account manager matches grade, size and deckboard coverage, then spells out the details on the quote.
