Ocean freight enters Florida through PortMiami, Port Everglades, JAXPORT and Port Tampa Bay, and Miami International's cargo complex links the state with Latin America. Winter vegetables and strawberries ship north, and I-4 through Polk County connects Tampa with Orlando.

Containers land at four major seaports, and Miami International Airport's west-side cargo area handles freight to and from Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The farm calendar runs opposite to most of the country. Miami-Dade growers ship most of their winter fruit and vegetables to the Northeast, the central states and Canada, Immokalee starts harvesting in late October, and Plant City calls itself the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World. Polk County sits on I-4 between Tampa and Orlando, and its economic development council says nearly 20 million Floridians live within a day's drive.

That puts pallet demand on a seasonal clock. From fall through spring, packing sheds from Homestead to Plant City need pallets that hold square in coolers. Polk County DCs ship store orders on recycled 48x40s all year. Port-area importers break down containers in Doral, Medley, Jacksonville's Northside and around Tampa, and any cargo they send back out by sea or air needs ISPM 15 heat treatment.

How freight moves

I-95 runs the Atlantic coast from Miami through Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville into Georgia, and I-75 carries Gulf coast and Tampa freight north toward Atlanta. I-4 links Tampa, Lakeland and Orlando, where Florida's Turnpike heads south. I-10 crosses the Panhandle from Jacksonville through Tallahassee to Pensacola. Rail containers reach the intermodal terminal at Winter Haven, and air cargo concentrates at Miami International. Exporters pick the port by region: PortMiami and Port Everglades in the south, JAXPORT in the northeast and Port Tampa Bay on the Gulf.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Florida.

Florida's produce season runs fall through spring, so packing sheds in Homestead, Immokalee and Plant City should line up Grade A or AAA pallets before harvest starts. Polk County and Jacksonville DCs mostly run recycled Grade A and Grade B 48x40s. Importers re-exporting to Latin America or the Caribbean need HT pallets carrying the ISPM 15 stamp. Humid storage invites mold on any wood pallet, HT or not, so keep stock under cover. Your account manager confirms the grade spec in writing.

Florida pallet rules to know.

  • Fla. Stat. § 506.19

    Lets an owner adopt a mark for pallets, crates and similar containers and record it with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. A recorded mark with its registration number is prima facie evidence of ownership.

  • Fla. Stat. § 506.24

    Possessing a pallet or other container bearing a mark registered under the chapter, without the owner's written authority, is a first-degree misdemeanor, and possession without that authority is prima facie evidence of a violation.

Buying pallets in Florida: questions

Can you line up pallets for Plant City strawberry season?+
Yes. Tell your account manager when picking starts, how many pallets a typical day fills and the footprint your cooler uses. Berry packers usually take Grade A or AAA 48x40s. We deliver to farms and coolers across eastern Hillsborough County.
Do re-exports from Miami to Latin America need heat-treated pallets?+
Yes. Many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean enforce ISPM 15, so wood pallets under outbound cargo should be heat treated and carry the stamp. Tell your account manager which loads are export and the order specifies HT pallets from an ALSC-accredited facility.
Can you deliver to DCs along I-4 in Polk County?+
Yes. Distribution centers in Lakeland, Auburndale, Winter Haven and Bartow are on our delivery map. Most ship store orders on recycled 48x40 stringers. Share your grade requirement and dock address, and your account manager confirms quantity and spec.
What does Florida law say about pallets with a registered mark?+
Florida lets owners record a pallet mark with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and holding marked pallets without the owner's written permission is a misdemeanor. Ask your account manager for unbranded stock, and set aside any marked pallets that arrive with inbound freight for the owner.
Do warehouses near JAXPORT need anything special?+
Import warehouses on the Northside and around Blount Island mostly need recycled 48x40s to rebuild container freight for retail. If any cargo heads back out by sea, those pallets need ISPM 15 heat treatment. We deliver across Duval and Clay counties by the truckload.
Where can I buy pallets in Florida?+
