What Minnesota makes and ships

Minnesota at a glance

Minnesota freight centers on the Twin Cities, where I-94 meets I-35, then reaches deep into farm country: turkey barns around Willmar, pork in Austin, peas and sweet corn in the south, sugar beets on the Red River.

Minnesota runs on food, from field to headquarters. GREATER MSP says the region hosts five of the world's 30 largest food companies. Growers call Minnesota the top turkey state, with processing around Willmar, and Austin packs pork. Southern Minnesota led the nation in green peas in 2025 and ranked second in sweet corn, with canneries at Blue Earth, Glencoe and Montgomery. Minnesota grows more sugar beets than any other state, and Red River Valley beets feed factories at Moorhead, Crookston and East Grand Forks. Duluth ships grain and ore.

Demand swings with the calendar. Canning runs through late summer, and beet harvest and factory slicing start in the fall, so pallet orders jump in those weeks. Meat and poultry plants ship year-round into cold chains and want pallets that stay sound in freezers. Twin Cities DCs in Shakopee, Eagan, Rogers and Brooklyn Park run standard 48x40s steadily, and winter roads make it worth planning orders ahead.

Ports, rail and highways

How freight moves

I-94 crosses the Twin Cities on its way between Chicago and Fargo, and I-35 splits into I-35W and I-35E between Burnsville and Forest Lake before heading on to Duluth and Des Moines. I-90 crosses southern Minnesota past Austin, and US-52 links the metro to Rochester. Intermodal ramps at Midway in St. Paul and Shoreham in Minneapolis load and unload containers, and MSP handles air cargo. The Duluth Seaway Port Authority calls its port the Great Lakes' largest by tonnage, and trucks reach Ontario and Manitoba at International Falls and Warroad.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Minnesota.

Turkey, pork and frozen-food plants usually order AAA or new 48x40s whose boards won't crack at freezer temperatures. Twin Cities DCs run Grade B recycled for most store freight, with Grade A for retailers that reject repairs. Sugar factories and canneries need a big batch of Grade A or B pallets ahead of the season. Pallets made from U.S. or Canadian wood and shipped straight into Canada are exempt from ISPM 15 under Canada's rules, but anything bound overseas needs HT pallets stamped under ISPM 15. Specs are confirmed in writing before the order ships.

Cities and rules in Minnesota

State law

Minnesota pallet rules to know.

  • Minn. Stat. § 325F.795

Anyone holding a marked plastic merchandise pallet without authorization, or maliciously removing the owner's name from one, is liable for three times the pallet's cost plus fees. Buyers or lessees must keep a bill of sale. Wood pallets aren't covered.

  • Minn. Stat. § 115A.03, subd. 22b

Defines packaging for Minnesota's waste-management chapter to include pallets and packing such as blocking, bracing, cushioning and strapping. The state's packaging stewardship law, § 115A.1441, adopts this definition with narrow exemptions, so shippers should check how it applies.

Buying pallets in Minnesota: questions

Do you deliver to turkey processors around Willmar?
Yes. We truck full loads to processing plants and cold-storage warehouses in Willmar and the surrounding counties. Most of these docks want strong 48x40s that hold up in freezers. Share your spec, and your account manager confirms grade and delivery.
When should Red River Valley sugar shippers order pallets?
Before harvest. Factories in Moorhead, Crookston and East Grand Forks need standard 48x40s in Grade A or B for bagged sugar, and demand jumps once beets start arriving in the fall. Booking early helps, and the grade is settled in writing up front.
Do loads crossing into Canada at International Falls or Warroad need heat-treated pallets?
Under Canada's import rules, pallets made from U.S. or Canadian wood and shipped directly from the continental U.S. are exempt from ISPM 15. If the freight will be re-exported overseas, or the receiver insists, order HT pallets. Tell us the final destination and your account manager confirms the spec.
Can you deliver to warehouses in Shakopee, Eagan or Rogers?
Yes. We deliver to DCs across the Twin Cities metro, including Shakopee, Eagan, Rogers and Brooklyn Park. Send the address, the receiving schedule and the grade you buy now, and every detail comes back to you in writing.
Where can I buy pallets in Minnesota?
From us, by the full truckload: 616 recycled 48x40s per truck, or 520 block pallets. Call (470) 206-3352 or book a test load.
What do pallets cost delivered to Minnesota?
Full-truckload prices run from $4.75 a pallet for Grade B to $10.50 for AAA, freight included. Heat-treated adds $1.00–$1.50 per pallet.
When will a load reach Minnesota?
Your delivery date is on the quote, in writing, before you send a PO. Standard 48x40s often arrive in 0–2 business days. New and custom builds take longer.
