What Virginia makes and ships

Virginia at a glance

Virginia freight splits between the Port of Virginia's marine terminals in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Newport News and the I-81 truck corridor down the Shenandoah Valley. Richmond sits between them on I-95, tied to the coast by a James River barge service.

Hampton Roads is the import door. Containers land at Norfolk International Terminals and Virginia International Gateway, while breakbulk and roll-on cargo cross the docks at Newport News. Trains carry boxes about 200 miles inland to the Virginia Inland Port at Front Royal, which the port says serves the Washington and Baltimore markets. West of the Blue Ridge, the Shenandoah Valley raises and processes poultry, and the governor's office calls Rockingham County the state's top farm county. Winchester calls itself the Apple Capital and packs fruit from the orchards around it.

That split creates two kinds of pallet buyers. Import warehouses around Suffolk and along I-95 south of Richmond strip containers and rebuild loads on standard 48x40s for retail and grocery networks. Valley processors need pallets that hold up in coolers and on wet floors, and they order on flock and harvest cycles instead of vessel calls. In between, plants along I-81 and I-64 ask for heavier or odd-sized platforms for machinery, building products and packaged goods.

How freight moves

I-64 links Hampton Roads with Richmond and continues west over the Blue Ridge to I-81 near Staunton. I-95 runs north from Petersburg through Richmond toward Washington, and I-85 starts at Petersburg for the run into North Carolina. Container trains connect the marine terminals with the Virginia Inland Port at Front Royal, close to I-66 and I-81, and barges shuttle boxes up the James to the Richmond Marine Terminal. For export loads, the Norfolk and Portsmouth terminals are the closest deepwater berths for most of the state.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Virginia.

Hampton Roads import warehouses mostly reuse Grade A and Grade B 48x40s, and Grade B covers one-way outbound freight that never comes back. Valley turkey and chicken plants usually step up to AAA or new pallets, because wet floors and cold rooms punish loose boards. Apple packers and anyone else shipping wood packaging out of Norfolk or Portsmouth need HT pallets with the ISPM 15 mark. Plants making heavy or oddly shaped goods along I-81 can order block or custom sizes, and your account manager puts the grade spec in writing.

Buying pallets in Virginia: questions

Do loads leaving through Norfolk or Portsmouth need heat-treated pallets?+
If the pallets leave the country with the cargo, yes. Countries that follow ISPM 15 require wood packaging to be heat treated and stamped. Tell us the shipment is export and your account manager writes HT pallets from an ALSC-accredited facility into the order.
Can you deliver to warehouses near the Virginia Inland Port in Front Royal?+
Yes. Warehouses around Front Royal and Warren County sit in the I-66 and I-81 freight belt, and we deliver there by the truckload. Give your account manager the dock address, the pallet size and the grade you use, and the spec is confirmed in writing.
What pallet do Shenandoah Valley turkey and chicken plants ask for?+
Most want sound boards that won't shed splinters or loose nails in wet processing areas, so AAA recycled or new 48x40s are common requests. Tell your account manager what your QA team accepts, including any moisture or species limits, and those terms go on the order.
Do you serve Richmond-area DCs along I-95 and I-295?+
Yes. Warehouses in Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover and Prince George counties are on the delivery map. Most run standard 48x40 stringer pallets with partial 4-way entry, and many specify Grade A. If your forklifts need full 4-way access, ask about block pallets.
Where can I buy pallets in Virginia?+
From us, by the full truckload: 616 recycled 48x40s per truck, or 520 block pallets. Call (470) 206-3352 or book a test load.
What do pallets cost delivered to Virginia?+
Full-truckload prices run from $4.75 a pallet for Grade B to $10.50 for AAA, freight included. Heat-treated adds $1.00–$1.50 per pallet.
When will a load reach Virginia?+
Your delivery date is on the quote, in writing, before you send a PO. Standard 48x40s often arrive in 0–2 business days. New and custom builds take longer.
