What Albuquerque makes and ships
Albuquerque at a glance
Albuquerque is New Mexico's crossroads. I-25 and I-40 meet at the Big I, a rail main line runs down the Rio Grande valley to the division yard at Belen, and the warehouses, fab suppliers and food plants between them restock a big, thinly settled state.
Albuquerque carries about half of New Mexico's economic activity. Kirtland Air Force Base, the University of New Mexico and Sandia National Laboratories top the employer list, and a large semiconductor fab operates in neighboring Rio Rancho. Factories in the city make electric equipment, food products, and stone, glass and clay goods, and a plastic-pipe maker took over a former solar factory at Mesa del Sol, beside the Sunport. Mexico takes about three-fifths of the state's exports, and computer parts and processors lead the export list. The valley around the city grows chile and wine grapes.
That makes Albuquerque a distribution town as much as a factory town. Warehouses around the city restock stores across a large rural state and cycle standard 48x40s constantly. Fab suppliers and electronics shippers care about pallets that protect delicate freight and pass export inspection, since so much of the state's output heads south. Chile roasters and food plants add a late-summer rush when the green crop comes in, and Valencia County's industrial parks add demand to the south.

How freight moves
I-40, the city's main east–west artery and a transcontinental route, crosses I-25 at the Big I just northeast of downtown, and US 550 splits off I-25 in Bernalillo. A transcontinental rail main line runs through the Belen yard, 35 miles south, where about 110 trains a day pass; inside the city the railroad keeps only a small yard. The Sunport has a freight center and air-cargo ramp and shares runways with Kirtland. Exporters reach Mexico through the Santa Teresa port of entry, which has commercial lanes into Chihuahua.

Which pallet to order
The right pallet grade for Albuquerque.
Warehouses around the Big I can run recycled GMA-style 48x40s, the partial four-way stringer design: Grade A for loads going to retail receivers, Grade B for floor storage and moves between buildings. Fab suppliers and electronics shippers should ask for new or AAA pallets. Freight crossing into Chihuahua at Santa Teresa should ride HT pallets stamped under ISPM 15, since Mexico generally applies the standard; a customs broker confirms the current rule. Chile and food plants want sound decks for coolers. Your account manager confirms the grade spec in writing.
