An Atlanta broker, a yard near your dock.
Chesapeake Pallets is a pallet broker based in Atlanta. We don't run a yard in Baton Rouge. For each load we buy from an independent yard close to your dock that has your grade in stock, and the delivered price includes the freight. Baton Rouge at a glance
What Baton Rouge makes and moves.
Process industry anchors the capital region. The Greater Baton Rouge Economic Partnership counts more than 21,000 process-industry workers, with chemical complexes at Geismar and Plaquemine and a polyolefins plant in East Baton Rouge whose recent expansion doubled its polypropylene capacity. Across the river, the port's Port Allen docks include terminals for grain, sugar, molasses and coffee, and its container-on-barge network moves more than 20,500 boxes a year. A 3.4-million-square-foot robotic fulfillment center, opened in 2024, added parcel volume.
Pallet demand follows the docks and buildings around those plants. Port Allen's riverfront warehouses move goods among ships, barges, rail cars and trucks. Pipe and steel fabricators ship long, heavy pieces that standard stringers can't carry. Coffee and sugar shippers sell to grocers with exacting receiving rules. The fulfillment center and other DCs take in vendor freight on standard 48x40s. And cargo headed overseas, by ship from the deepwater docks or by container through New Orleans, needs wood stamped under ISPM 15.

Port Allen river warehouses
The Port of Greater Baton Rouge lists 525,000 square feet of warehouse space on the Mississippi, with covered rail tracks between buildings and conveyors to the wharf. Its 84-acre Inland Rivers Marine Terminal adds a container marshalling yard and covered rail transfer. Freight staged between modes there needs pallets that stack, rehandle and travel well.

Capital-region coffee and sugar
Port Allen's terminals handle sugar, molasses and coffee, and a family-owned coffee brand founded in Baton Rouge is still based here, bringing beans in through the ports of New Orleans and Houston. Packaged coffee goes to grocers in cases, and sugar and molasses cargo moves through the same docks, so shippers want square, sound 48x40s that pass retail receiving.

Plant-service fabricators
Pipe-fabrication and steel-fabricating firms are part of the region's process-industry base, according to the regional partnership. Their spools, supports and steel parts run long, heavy and lopsided. Block pallets or custom skids rated for the weight, with wide stance and stout deckboards, ride far better than light stringers on a flatbed or in a crate.

East Baton Rouge fulfillment
The robotic fulfillment center in East Baton Rouge Parish can process up to 300,000 packages a day, per the regional partnership. Consumer-goods vendors deliver into buildings like it on 48x40 pallets, and conveyor-fed receiving lines have little patience for split boards, missing blocks or off-size footprints.

How freight moves
Ports, rail and interstates.
I-10 crosses the Mississippi on the Horace Wilkinson Bridge between Port Allen and downtown, then splits with I-12, which heads east through Denham Springs and Walker to Hammond and Slidell. I-110 runs north to Scotlandville near Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, and US 190 crosses the river on the Huey P. Long Bridge upstream. Three Class I railroads serve the region. Panamax ships can reach the port's deepwater docks, but Port NOLA, down I-10, is the state's only deep-water container port and the nearest place to put a box on an ocean ship.

Which pallet to order
The right grade for Baton Rouge.
Port Allen warehouses and cross-docks usually do fine with recycled Grade B 48x40s. The fulfillment center and grocery-bound coffee or sugar loads call for Grade A, or AAA where a receiver checks every board. Fabrication shops shipping pipe spools and steel parts need block pallets or custom sizes made to the piece. Anything leaving on a ship from the deepwater docks, or in a container through New Orleans, should ride heat-treated (HT) wood bearing the IPPC mark. Your account manager confirms the grade spec in writing.
