What Mobile makes and ships

Mobile at a glance

Mobile is Alabama's deep-water port. Ships work a 50-foot channel to container, steel, coal and forest-products terminals, I-10 and I-65 meet near downtown, and jetliners roll out of Brookley while shrimp boats unload at Bayou La Batre.

The Port of Mobile shapes most local freight. The Alabama Port Authority's channel opened to its full 50-foot depth in October 2025, and the container terminal's on-dock rail yard moves boxes from ship to train within a business day. A dedicated steel terminal serves a large steel plant in Calvert, north of the city. Manufacturing clusters at the Brookley Aeroplex, where jetliner final assembly began in 2015 and two more lines have opened since. Shipyards line the river, and Bayou La Batre packs seafood from hundreds of boats.

That makes Mobile a heavy-freight pallet market. Steel, pipe and aircraft parts want block pallets and custom skids. Seafood packers need boards that hold up to ice and brine. Port warehouses and transload docks stuff and strip containers, and anything leaving for overseas needs heat-treated wood. Heat, humidity and hurricane season matter too, since pallets stored outside pick up moisture and storms can close roads and docks on short notice.

How freight moves

I-10 crosses Mobile from northeast to southwest, dropping under the river through the George Wallace Tunnel and crossing the bay to Baldwin County on the Jubilee Parkway. I-65 begins at I-10 and runs north to Montgomery and Birmingham, and I-165 links I-65 in Prichard to downtown. The container terminal's on-dock rail yard connects to Class I railroads; the port authority cites five. The Downtown Airport at Brookley handles cargo flights, and a port-run inland rail terminal in Montgomery is slated to open in 2027.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Mobile.

Steel, metals and aerospace shippers should start with block pallets or custom skids, often hardwood or new lumber, sized to the piece. Seafood packers do better with Grade A or new 48x40s that tolerate ice and wash-down. Port warehouses run Grade B for internal moves and Grade A for outbound customers. Every wood pallet in an export container needs heat treatment and the ISPM 15 stamp. Through humid summers, keep spares covered and off the ground. Your account manager confirms the spec in writing.

Buying pallets in Mobile: questions

Can you deliver pallets to seafood packers in Bayou La Batre?
Yes. We deliver truckloads to packers and cold storage in Bayou La Batre and across south Mobile County. Wet product calls for sound boards, so tell your account manager what your plant checks at receiving, and we write the grade, size and any new-lumber requirement into the order.
Do export containers at the Port of Mobile need heat-treated pallets?
Yes, for wood pallets that sail with the cargo. Most destination countries follow ISPM 15, which calls for heat treatment and the stamp. Flag the export lots, and your account manager sources HT pallets from accredited facilities and lists the mark on the quote.
What pallet carries steel coils or plate from the Calvert area?
Not a light stringer. Coils and plate usually ride on block pallets, hardwood skids or custom builds with heavier boards. Send the weight, footprint and how the load is lifted, and your account manager finds a yard that builds to it and spells out the spec on the quote.
Do you deliver to aerospace suppliers at the Brookley Aeroplex?
Yes. We deliver to plants and warehouses at Brookley and along the waterfront south of downtown. Aerospace parts often need custom skids or block pallets built to a drawing, and your account manager confirms dimensions and lumber before anything ships.
Can we order pallets ahead of hurricane season on the Gulf Coast?
Yes. Storm warnings can shut roads and docks with little notice, so it helps to order before peak season and store spares under cover. Tell your account manager your expected usage, and we line up loads from a nearby independent yard.
Where can I buy pallets in Mobile, AL?
From us, by the full truckload: 616 recycled 48x40s per truck, or 520 block pallets. Call (470) 206-3352 or book a test load.
What do pallets cost delivered to Mobile, AL?
Full-truckload prices run from $4.75 a pallet for Grade B to $10.50 for AAA, freight included. Heat-treated adds $1.00–$1.50 per pallet.
When will a load reach Mobile, AL?
Your delivery date is on the quote, in writing, before you send a PO. Standard 48x40s often arrive in 0–2 business days. New and custom builds take longer.
