What Birmingham makes and ships
Birmingham at a glance
Birmingham was built on iron and steel, and pipe and steel still ship from North Birmingham, Bessemer and Fairfield. I-20, I-59, I-65 and I-22 meet here, with the deep-water Port of Mobile at the bottom of I-65.
Heavy industry still sets Birmingham's freight pattern. Cast-iron pipe makers are headquartered in the city, a ductile-iron pipe plant runs on Bessemer's north side, and steel is still made in neighboring Fairfield. Two soft-drink bottlers founded in the early 1900s are headquartered here, alongside other food companies based in town. Thirty-some miles west on I-20/59, an auto assembly plant near Vance draws parts freight along the interstate, and three Class I railroads keep major yards in the metro.
That makes many Birmingham loads heavy. Pipe, fittings, castings and steel parts crush light stringers, so plants lean on block pallets, hardwood skids or custom sizes cut to the part. Beverage and grocery warehouses go the other way and run through standard 48x40s quickly. Auto suppliers want pallets matched to their racks and returnable packaging. Overseas shipments that leave through the Port of Mobile need heat-treated wood with the ISPM 15 mark.

How freight moves
I-20, I-59 and I-65 cross near downtown, and I-22, finished in 2012, runs northwest to the I-269 loop at Byhalia, Miss., outside Memphis. I-459 bypasses the city to the south, and construction has started on I-422, the Northern Beltline. Three Class I railroads keep major yards in the metro. Port Birmingham's terminals load barges on the Black Warrior River. For ocean freight, the deep-water Port of Mobile sits at the south end of I-65 with five Class I railroads.

Which pallet to order
The right pallet grade for Birmingham.
Pipe, castings and steel parts belong on block pallets or custom hardwood skids sized to the load; a light Grade B stringer is the wrong tool for that weight. Auto suppliers should order block or custom builds matched to their racks and the customer's print. Beverage and grocery warehouses get the most from Grade A recycled 48x40s, with Grade B for one-way outbound. Anything leaving through Mobile for another country needs HT pallets stamped under ISPM 15. Your account manager confirms the spec in writing.
