What Arizona makes and ships

Arizona at a glance

Arizona's freight comes in two streams. Trucks from the Southern California ports roll east on I-10 into the West Valley warehouse belt around Phoenix, while Mexican produce crosses at Nogales and San Luis and heads north on I-19 and US-95.

Arizona's old economy rested on copper, cotton, cattle, citrus and climate. The newer one is about people and goods. Greater Phoenix ships consumer goods from warehouses along I-10 and Loop 303 in the West Valley, and Chandler hosts semiconductor fabs and chip-company headquarters. Tucson has an inland rail port where Mexican squash is loaded into ocean containers for export. Out west, Yuma County grows about 90% of the leafy vegetables produced in the U.S. from November to March.

Pallet demand follows those flows. West Valley DCs move standard 48x40s at volume for retail and e-commerce freight. Produce distributors in Nogales and Yuma's lettuce coolers peak in the winter vegetable season and need sound pallets that hold up in cold rooms. Chip and electronics suppliers in the East Valley may set tight specs on new or custom pallets. Loads headed south into Sonora need heat-treated wood with the ISPM 15 stamp.

Ports, rail and highways

How freight moves

I-10 runs from the California line through Phoenix and Tucson toward New Mexico, and I-17 climbs north from Phoenix to Flagstaff and I-40. I-19 links Tucson to Nogales, and I-8 runs from Yuma to I-10 near Casa Grande. Produce trucks cross at Nogales–Mariposa and at San Luis II, the commercial port south of Yuma, while the Port of Tucson loads international containers onto rail. Phoenix importers draw on the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports, and Sonora's Port of Guaymas feeds the Nogales crossing.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Arizona.

Produce loads from Nogales and Yuma pass through cold rooms on the way to grocery DCs, so Grade A 48x40s with sound deckboards are the starting point, and some buyers ask for new. West Valley retail DCs take Grade A or AAA, while e-commerce transload can often run Grade B. East Valley electronics shippers should spec new or custom pallets. Anything bound for Mexico through Nogales or San Luis needs HT pallets stamped under ISPM 15. Your account manager confirms the grade spec in writing for each dock.

Cities and rules in Arizona

State law

Arizona pallet rules to know.

  • Ariz. Rev. Stat. § 44-1799.81

Businesses that recycle, shred, resell or destroy plastic or wood bulk merchandise containers must record and photo-ID the seller before buying five or more logo-marked plastic or ten or more wood containers at once, and keep records a year.

Buying pallets in Arizona: questions

Can you deliver to produce warehouses in Nogales during the winter deal?
Yes. We deliver to produce distributors and cold-storage docks in Nogales and the rest of Santa Cruz County. The winter vegetable season is when these docks use the most pallets, so plan loads ahead of the peak. Your account manager spells out grade and size on the quote for each warehouse.
What pallet do Yuma lettuce coolers use?
Lettuce and leafy greens ship in wet cartons through forced-air coolers, so sound Grade A or new 48x40s are the usual choice. Some buyers set their own pallet rules. Send us the cooler's spec and the receiving DC, and your account manager confirms the grade.
Do loads into Sonora through Nogales or San Luis need heat-treated pallets?
Yes. Mexico applies ISPM 15 to wood packaging entering the country, so southbound loads should use HT pallets stamped by an accredited facility. Tell us the crossing and the plant it serves, and your account manager puts the stamp and grade on the quote.
Can you deliver to West Valley DCs along I-10 and Loop 303?
Yes. We deliver to warehouses in Goodyear, Avondale, Tolleson, Buckeye and southwest Phoenix. Give us the dock address, appointment rules and the receiver's pallet spec, and your account manager will confirm the load and grade before it leaves the yard.
Where can I buy pallets in Arizona?
From us, by the full truckload: 616 recycled 48x40s per truck, or 520 block pallets. Call (470) 206-3352 or book a test load.
What do pallets cost delivered to Arizona?
Full-truckload prices run from $4.75 a pallet for Grade B to $10.50 for AAA, freight included. Heat-treated adds $1.00–$1.50 per pallet.
When will a load reach Arizona?
Your delivery date is on the quote, in writing, before you send a PO. Standard 48x40s often arrive in 0–2 business days. New and custom builds take longer.
