SC Ports works container ships at Wando Welch in Mount Pleasant, at North Charleston and at the Leatherman Terminal, which opened on the old Navy Base in 2021 and can take ships of up to 20,000 TEU. Columbus Street handles vehicles and breakbulk. Manufacturing followed the water: North Charleston is one of three places in the world where widebody long-range jetliners are assembled, vans have been built at Palmetto Commerce Park since 2006, and a car plant anchors Camp Hall in Ridgeville.
Two kinds of pallet buyers come out of that. Import warehouses strip floor-loaded containers and rebuild the cartons onto 48x40s for store networks, so they cycle recycled stringers constantly. Plants and their suppliers buy to an engineering spec, often block or custom, for parts that can't shift in transit. Exporters loading boxes near the terminals add a third need: heat-treated wood with the ISPM 15 mark. The regional development alliance counts about 80 million square feet of industrial space, with more under construction.

Ridgeville retail import center
A retailer's import distribution center opened at Ridgeville Industrial Campus in 2022. It stores and sorts goods arriving through the Port of Charleston and supplies regional DCs and hundreds of stores. Buildings like it, and the vendors shipping into them, move general merchandise on recycled 48x40s that have to rack and convey without snags.

I-26 transload warehouses
Third-party warehouses from North Charleston through Ladson, Summerville and Jedburg devan import containers and stage export loads. Construction keeps coming: a 600,000-square-foot warehouse near I-26 in Summerville was announced in January 2026. Transload crews need pallets that take the forks every time, so sorted Grade A and Grade B stringers matter more than new lumber.

I-26 starts downtown and runs past North Charleston and the airport to Summerville, Ridgeville and on to Columbia, while I-526, the Mark Clark Expressway, loops from West Ashley to Mount Pleasant near Wando Welch. Two Class I railroads serve North Charleston, and SC Ports is finishing the Navy Base Intermodal Facility, tied to Leatherman by a one-mile private drayage road. Overnight trains link the harbor with Inland Port Greer on I-85 and Inland Port Dillon on I-95. Charleston International Airport shares its runways with the air base.

Import warehouses do best with recycled Grade A 48x40 stringers for outbound store loads and Grade B for shuttles inside the building.
