The port drives Savannah's economy. Import containers leave Garden City Terminal by truck for transload and distribution buildings in Garden City, Port Wentworth, Pooler and Effingham and Bryan counties, or by double-stack train to Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas and Memphis. Ocean Terminal, closer to downtown, is being renovated to handle containers too. Manufacturing is growing west along I-16, where an EV assembly plant in Ellabell reached full production in October 2024 and suppliers have announced new factories to serve it.

Most pallet demand here follows ship schedules. When a vessel's boxes come off the terminal, transload crews need 48x40s on the floor before the containers reach their doors, and retail DCs need pallets that pass store receiving and sit in racking. The export side matters just as much. Plants along I-16 and other shippers loading containers outbound need heat-treated wood with a legible ISPM 15 mark for anything going overseas.

Mason Mega Rail, an 85-acre on-terminal yard, runs double-stack trains the GPA says reach Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas and Memphis in two to three days. Drayage trucks use SR 21 and I-516 between the gates and buildings in Port Wentworth, Garden City and Rincon. Ocean Terminal adds a second set of berths closer to downtown. Savannah/Hilton Head International handles air freight northwest of downtown.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Savannah.
