What Billings makes and ships

Billings at a glance

Billings is eastern Montana's warehouse and refinery city. I-90 and I-94 meet on its east side, a major rail yard sits down the road in Laurel, and trucks restock stores, ranch suppliers and job sites across a wide trade area.

Billings is the trade and distribution center for much of the state east of the Continental Divide, with more than a quarter of Montana's wholesale business. Three of the state's four oil refineries are in Yellowstone County, two in Billings and one in Laurel. A beet-sugar factory sits in the city, irrigated farms nearby grow alfalfa, wheat, barley and corn, and local manufacturers include a soft-drink bottler, a commercial bakery and a dairy. Health care is a leading employment sector.

Pallet demand follows the wholesale trade. Distributors send mixed loads to towns hours away, so pallets go out and many never come back. Food plants need sound pallets for bagged sugar, packaged bread and cased drinks. Refinery contractors and industrial supply houses buy for parts rooms and job sites. And because Montana has no sales tax, shoppers drive in from Wyoming, which keeps retail freight moving through the city's warehouses.

How freight moves

I-90 runs east–west through the south side of the city, from Laurel past downtown to Lockwood, and I-94 begins just east of Billings at a junction with I-90 before heading northeast to Forsyth, Miles City and Glendive. The Billings Bypass links Lockwood with the Heights, and Skyway Drive, a beltway finished in 2023, opened land north and west of the airport to development. Laurel Yard, west of the city, is a major rail yard and railroad division point. Billings Logan International handles passengers and air cargo. Much of Montana's baking grain sells through West Coast ports.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Billings.

Wholesalers shipping across eastern Montana do well with recycled GMA-style 48x40s, Grade B for one-way loads and storage and Grade A where the receiver inspects. Sugar and other dense food loads should start with new pallets or AAA recycled stock with heavier stringers. Bakery, dairy and drink docks want tight top decks that don't snag film or cases. Refinery supply shops may need block or custom builds. Grain or food packed for export needs HT pallets with the ISPM 15 mark. Your account manager confirms the grade spec in writing.

Buying pallets in Billings: questions

Can you deliver to warehouses in Lockwood near the I-90/I-94 junction?
Yes. We deliver full truckloads to docks in Lockwood, along I-90 on the south side and out to the west end. Send your dock hours and appointment rules with the order, and your account manager confirms the grade spec and delivery details before the truck is booked.
What pallet works for bagged sugar and other dense food loads?
Heavy bags crush weak deck boards and bow thin stringers. Ask for new pallets, AAA recycled stock with heavier stringers, or block pallets, and tell your account manager the bag weight and how high you stack. The spec is confirmed before the truck is booked.
Do you deliver to Laurel and the refinery and rail shops there?
Yes. Laurel, about 15 miles from Billings, is part of our Billings coverage. Refinery and rail suppliers often ship heavy, uneven parts, so mention weights and footprints and your account manager can price block pallets or custom sizes.
Do export loads from Billings need heat-treated pallets?
If the load leaves the U.S. on wood, most destination countries require ISPM 15. Order HT pallets carrying the ISPM 15 stamp and keep the mark visible. Loads to other states don't need the treatment, and your freight forwarder can confirm the rule for each destination.
Where can I buy pallets in Billings, MT?
From us, by the full truckload: 616 recycled 48x40s per truck, or 520 block pallets. Call (470) 206-3352 or book a test load.
What do pallets cost delivered to Billings, MT?
Full-truckload prices run from $4.75 a pallet for Grade B to $10.50 for AAA, freight included. Heat-treated adds $1.00–$1.50 per pallet.
When will a load reach Billings, MT?
Your delivery date is on the quote, in writing, before you send a PO. Standard 48x40s often arrive in 0–2 business days. New and custom builds take longer.
