What Montana makes and ships

Montana at a glance

Montana's freight crosses long distances between few docks. Wheat, barley and lentils come off the northern plains, Billings refines fuel and restocks stores across the eastern half, and Canadian trade moves through Sweetgrass on I-15. Much of its baking grain heads west for export.

Montana leads the nation in lentil production and ranks second or third for spring wheat, durum and barley, according to the state agriculture department's NASDA profile, which adds that up to 80% of the state's high-quality baking grain ships from West Coast ports to buyers in Asia and the Middle East. Billings, the most populous city, is the trade and distribution center for much of Montana east of the Continental Divide, and Yellowstone County holds three of the state's oil refineries. Great Falls grew on grain milling and rail.

For pallets, distance is the defining fact. Docks sit hours apart on I-90, I-94 and I-15, so buyers plan around full truckloads and pick grades that last through repeat trips. Bagged lentils, peas and specialty grain packed into containers need heat-treated pallets. Billings distributors restocking stores across eastern Montana run standard 48x40s, and the Yellowstone Valley's sugar, bakery and dairy plants want sound pallets under food cases.

How freight moves

I-90 crosses the state from Lookout Pass through Missoula, Butte, Bozeman and Billings, and I-94 splits off just east of Billings toward North Dakota. I-15 runs north from Idaho through Butte, Helena and Great Falls to the Sweetgrass–Coutts crossing, which a Great Falls TV station called the busiest port of entry for both Montana and Alberta. Grain trains roll west, since export grain leaves through West Coast ports. Billings Logan International adds air cargo in the east.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Montana.

Billings distributors and retail suppliers mostly run GMA-style 48x40s: Grade B for internal and warehouse moves, Grade A where receivers check board condition. Sugar, bakery and dairy plants should start at Grade A or new. Bagged lentils, peas and specialty grain bound for export need heat-treated (HT) pallets stamped under ISPM 15. Loads crossing into Alberta generally don't, but confirm with the receiver. Long hauls on I-90 and I-15 favor sturdy pallets, and heavy equipment dealers may want block or custom sizes.

Buying pallets in Montana: questions

Can you deliver pallets to warehouses in Billings and Laurel?
Yes. We arrange truckload deliveries across Yellowstone County, including distribution warehouses along I-90 and plants in Laurel. Tell your account manager the pallet your customers accept and your dock hours, and grade and size are confirmed in writing before the load is booked.
Do lentil and pea shippers need heat-treated pallets for export?
Usually, yes. Bagged pulses packed into containers for overseas buyers travel on wood packaging that importing countries expect to meet ISPM 15. Order heat-treated pallets stamped with the IPPC mark, and ask the buyer or forwarder whether the destination adds rules of its own.
Do loads crossing at Sweetgrass into Alberta need HT pallets?
In most cases, no. The United States and Canada generally exempt each other's wood packaging from ISPM 15 when the wood originates in either country. If freight continues overseas from Canada, or the receiver requires it anyway, order HT pallets and your account manager notes the spec in writing.
Can you deliver to manufacturers in Bozeman and Belgrade?
Yes. We deliver to plants and warehouses in Gallatin County along I-90. For machinery or equipment shipped on custom crates, send dimensions and load weight so your account manager can quote block or custom-size pallets and confirm the spec.
Do you cover Great Falls and the grain country along I-15?
Yes. We arrange deliveries to processors, grain handlers and warehouses in Great Falls and north toward Shelby. Tell your account manager whether product ships domestically or overseas, and the order is set up with standard or heat-treated pallets to match.
Where can I buy pallets in Montana?
From us, by the full truckload: 616 recycled 48x40s per truck, or 520 block pallets. Call (470) 206-3352 or book a test load.
What do pallets cost delivered to Montana?
Full-truckload prices run from $4.75 a pallet for Grade B to $10.50 for AAA, freight included. Heat-treated adds $1.00–$1.50 per pallet.
When will a load reach Montana?
Your delivery date is on the quote, in writing, before you send a PO. Standard 48x40s often arrive in 0–2 business days. New and custom builds take longer.
