What Portland makes and ships
Portland at a glance
Portland is a river port. Grain barges come down the Columbia to export elevators, Terminal 6 is Oregon's only international container terminal, and the Rivergate, Swan Island and Columbia Corridor districts pack industry between the rivers and I-5.
The metro builds semiconductors in Hillsboro, repairs ships in a Swan Island dry dock and moves farm goods from a wide inland region. Wheat barged down the Columbia reaches the export elevator at Terminal 5. Containers move through Terminal 6, renamed the Oregon Container Terminal when a private operator took over in January 2026. Greenhouse and nursery plants rank as Oregon's most valuable farm commodity, and the Willamette Valley grows most of the hazelnuts and grass seed sold in North America.
Pallet demand splits by district. Rivergate and the Columbia Corridor hold transload and distribution buildings that turn import and export freight, most of it on 48x40s. Valley nurseries ship potted stock to buyers out of state each spring. Hazelnut, berry and wine shippers run on harvest calendars, and Hillsboro's tech suppliers need custom crating. Exporters using Terminal 6, the Port of Vancouver or the Puget Sound terminals need heat-treated stock.

How freight moves
I-5 runs north across the Columbia to Vancouver and Seattle and south down the Willamette Valley. I-84 follows the Columbia Gorge east toward Boise, I-205 loops the east side past the airport, and US-26 and US-30 serve Hillsboro and the river towns. Terminal 6 has an eight-track on-dock intermodal yard, and grain reaches Terminal 5 by barge. PDX handles air cargo just south of the Columbia. Many Oregon importers and exporters also truck north to the Northwest Seaport Alliance terminals in Tacoma and Seattle.

Which pallet to order
The right pallet grade for Portland.
Export cargo through Terminal 6, Vancouver or the Puget Sound ports needs HT pallets marked under ISPM 15. Transload and distribution docks in Rivergate and Troutdale run fine on Grade B 48x40s for most moves and Grade A for retail-bound freight. Hazelnut, berry and wine shippers selling to grocers should order Grade A or AAA. Swan Island and Hillsboro manufacturers usually need block pallets or custom sizes. Nurseries shipping heavy pots may want new wood. Your account manager confirms grade, size and treatment in writing.
