Sourcing

Chesapeake Pallets is a pallet broker based in Atlanta. We don't own a yard. For each load we buy from the closest vetted yard that has your grade in stock. One account manager handles your quote, paperwork and invoice.

What Washington makes and ships

Washington at a glance

Washington ships on both sides of the Cascades. Seattle and Tacoma container terminals and Kent Valley transload buildings work the west, while apple packing houses in Wenatchee and Yakima and Columbia Basin potato plants work the east, tied together by I-90 and I-82.

USDA figures put apples at the top of Washington's farm value, followed by cattle, milk, potatoes and hay, with hops and onions also in the top ten. Wenatchee goes by the Apple Capital of the World, and fruit companies rank among Yakima's largest employers. West of the mountains, the Northwest Seaport Alliance runs the Seattle and Tacoma container terminals, which moved about 2.6 million TEUs of international boxes in 2024. Hay, frozen potato products and paper led exports by volume; furniture and machinery led imports.

That geography sets two pallet markets. Transload warehouses in Kent, Sumner, Fife and Auburn rebuild import freight onto pallets for trucks heading inland, and nearby distribution centers ship to stores across the Northwest. East of the Cascades, packing houses and potato plants need pallets timed to harvest and storage-room schedules, and export shippers need heat-treated stock. The alliance calls Washington the most trade-dependent state, so plenty of shippers here need pallets that can legally travel abroad.

Who buys pallets in Washington

Ports, rail and highways

How freight moves

I-5 links Tacoma, Seattle and Everett to the Canadian line at Blaine, where commercial trucks use the Pacific Highway crossing. SR 167 and SR 18 connect the Kent Valley warehouses with the Port of Tacoma, and I-90 crosses Snoqualmie Pass to Ellensburg, Moses Lake and Spokane. I-82 runs down the Yakima Valley to the Tri-Cities. On the Columbia, the Port of Vancouver USA bills itself as the furthest-inland deep-water port on the river and ships grain. Sea-Tac's cargo ramps handle air freight.

Which pallet to order

The right pallet grade for Washington.

Kent Valley transloaders can run Grade B recycled 48x40s for container rebuilds and warehouse moves, stepping up to Grade A when freight goes to retail DCs with strict specs. Apple, pear and cherry packers shipping to grocery chains usually want Grade A or AAA, and fruit bound for Asia should go on heat-treated (HT) pallets stamped under ISPM 15. Columbia Basin frozen-food plants should order pallets sturdy enough for freezer stacking. Ask for block pallets for heavy machinery or paper rolls headed to the docks.

Cities and rules in Washington

State law

Washington pallet rules to know.

  • RCW 9A.56.050

Theft in the third degree covers property worth $750 or less and also any theft that includes ten or more merchandise pallets or beverage crates, meaning pallets marked to show their owner. It is a gross misdemeanor.

  • RCW 9A.56.140

A person holding ten or more stolen merchandise pallets is presumed to know they are stolen, though that presumption can be rebutted. Pallet recyclers or repairers who receive them in the ordinary course of business have a defense.

Buying pallets in Washington: questions

Can you deliver to transload warehouses in Kent and Sumner?
Yes. We arrange truckload deliveries to Kent Valley, Sumner and Fife transload buildings. Tell your account manager how your containers are rebuilt, what the receiving DCs accept and your dock hours, and the grade and size are confirmed in writing before the load is booked.
Do apple exporters shipping fruit to Asia need heat-treated pallets?
Generally yes. Countries that apply ISPM 15 expect wood packaging to be heat-treated and stamped with the IPPC mark. Ask the importer or your forwarder for the destination's exact rules, and your account manager matches the order to them and puts the spec in writing.
Do you deliver east of the Cascades, to Spokane and the Tri-Cities?
Yes. We deliver to warehouses, packing houses and processors along I-90 and I-82, including Spokane Valley, Moses Lake, Pasco and Kennewick. Winter weather on the mountain passes can slow trucks, so give your account manager your dock hours and plan orders with some room.
Can I get pallets for frozen potato plants in the Columbia Basin?
Yes. Freezer plants need pallets that hold up to cold stacking and long reefer runs, and many export loads need HT stamping as well. Share your pallet spec or a sample, and your account manager puts grade, deckboard coverage and heat treatment on the quote before delivery.
Do loads heading into British Columbia need heat-treated pallets?
Usually not for pallets made from U.S. or Canadian wood, because the two countries generally exempt each other's wood packaging from ISPM 15. If the freight continues overseas from Canada, or the receiver insists, order HT pallets and your account manager notes it in writing.
Where can I buy pallets in Washington?
From us, by the full truckload: 616 recycled 48x40s per truck, or 520 block pallets. Call (470) 206-3352 or book a test load.
What do pallets cost delivered to Washington?
Full-truckload prices run from $4.75 a pallet for Grade B to $10.50 for AAA, freight included. Heat-treated adds $1.00–$1.50 per pallet.
When will a load reach Washington?
Your delivery date is on the quote, in writing, before you send a PO. Standard 48x40s often arrive in 0–2 business days. New and custom builds take longer.
